Wondered if someone could help me understand a solution to a question (attached). I don't get how it's possible to consider the two tension values separately and and together at the same time. I would have thought you needed to say something like T1+T2=mg, then you could subsitute in the equations for each T.

The top string is supporting all the weight below it, so has tension mg, but the bottom string also supports all the weight below it, so also has tension mg.
