The Student Room Group

Connaught Hall, Uni of London

might be a bit premature, but i'm applying to all london uni's for medicine next year and thinking about applying for intercollegiate halls if i get accepted. i've been round some with my sister and i think connaught halls looks nice... anyone know anything about connaught, what it's like, if the people are nice, where most of the students are from, which college they're from.... anything at all?! also, i've heard some of the halls - college and intercollegiate - are stricter than others about having friends visit and parties and stuff, what's connaught like? does anybody know? and do you think they'd be ok if my boyfriend stayed with me in my room (errr, i'm also a boy!!) ...josh

From all the ones I've been to it's probably the best value of all. Rooms are comparatively big TV lounges with sky on each floor, small kitchens, meals provided, games room, music room, beer garden, hotel-like lobby... and it's only £10 more per week than where I am which has none of these things!!

It's right next to UCL too if you're applying there.
Im at Connaught and its wonderful. People are very nice, facilities are excellent and we have a very active committee who arrange parties/pub crawls/film nights/ football/pool tournements etc etc. Food is just about edible (but thats the most you can say about the fare provided at any catered hall). No problems with fire alarms or obnoxious late night behaviour (both of which tend to be major negatives in most halls) and the area is absolutely wonderful. Everything you could want is within easy walking distance with Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Street practically round the corner. The student make up tends to vary year on year (or so the 2nd and 3rd year veterans tell me) but most students seem to be UCL/LSE in my experience. UCL and SOAS are the nearest institutions, both of which are a minutes walk away - very nice for those of us with dodgy time keeping or who enjoy staying in bed as long as possible. Possibly the biggest plus point about Connaught is the fact we have and run our own Bar which is open every day of the week 7-11 and is the heart of an excellent social scene within the hall.

Edit: We also have library rooms, computer rooms, a gym and a very relaxed attitude to overnight visitors with portable beds available.

Are you in an intercollegiate as well? sounds like connaught might be a good choice. are there sinks in every room? i know some of the halls only have sinks in the bathrooms... and how likely would it be that i would have to share a room?

the other one i was thinking about was international because it's all been done up a couple of years ago - is that nice? they wouldn't let me in to look round when i visited!!!

ok that sounds good... my sister stayed at canterbury last year and she said one student got thrown out of the hall in like the first month because of something really stupid, and she once got fined because her friend stayed until after 11pm... but she said some halls are stricter than others, connaught seems quite nice... i don't want to live in a prison! also i'm really worried about people being homophobic, i've had so many problems at school, and i want to go somewhere where i can just be myself.

Well without saying what they were actually thrown out for i cant comment. As for being fined because someone stayed after 11pm that def wouldnt happen here. Whether or not people are homophobic will be entirely dependant upon who else happens to stay in the hall with you but this year youd have nothing to worry about.
According to the notice board in the foyet, Connaught Halls are strict to actions of homophobia, quite rightly so.

I'm not no I'm in Schafer House (which is also a good hall) but yes I'm pretty sure there are sinks in each room in Connaught.

All the rooms at Connaught Hall have a washbasin. They also have a kettle provided, and internet and telephone lines. Every room also has a tv aerial socket but you must pay for your own tv licence if you have one in your room.

You probably already know that we are a fully catered hall: that means breakfast & dinner are provided every day Mon - Fri, and brunch & dinner at weekends. We have two non-smoking common rooms, both with tv, one with a table tennis table; a fitness room (exercise bike, rowing machine, multigym); pantries with a microwave & refrigerator on every floor; a library/study room; a computer room (just going to open this week); a secure bike shed; and a laudrette. We also have a bar, which is run the elected Residents' Club Committee.

How likley are you to share? We have 215 resident students. 10 of them share, so the odds are much in favour of getting a single room. We also try to allocate shared rooms to students returning to the Hall for a second year, as they usually have a friend they wouldn't mind sharing with.

At Connaught Hall we try to keep the rules as simple as possible; we try to explain to students why they need to follow the rules (like no noise after 11pm), and only use disciplinary action when someone's behaviour is having an adverse effect on the safety or security of the Hall, or on another residents' happiness, health, or enjoyment of the Hall. So yes, we do have rules, and we do expect residents to follow them, but I think most cohorts of students have found us to be very fair.

We are strict about enforcing the University of London's anti-discrimination policy. This includes sexual orientation as well as race, sex, disability, age, religion, etc. Problems of this sort have only arisen 2 or 3 times in the last eight years at Connaught Hall; but if you did have any problems, you would just need to talk confidentially to the Warden or Vice-Warden to help you sort things out.

I would have attached a pdf copy of the Connaught Hall Resident's Handbook 2005/2006 for you, but the file is too large (1.14 Mb). If anyone wants a copy of the handbook, PM me your email address and I'll send it to you.

international hall is also very very nice. you're right it has just recently been done up and as you can tell from the lobby it is very modern compared to the other halls.

rooms are large compared to other halls i have seen. there is a sink in every room but toilets and showers are communial- which i thought would be a problem for me but it totally isn't as its amazingingly clean and new-ish.

we have a bar with pool tables, air hockey, foosball and PS2 (for free). we got an internet cafe, study rooms, vending machines, restaurant, music rooms, laundrette, squash court, tv lounges on each floor, kitchen facilities on each floor, 2 movie/dvd rooms, a courtyard (within the actual premises) and a conservatory.

its by russel square tube station. easy walking distance to UCL and SOAS. Takes about 15mins to walk to LSE and 20mins to KCL. Is also closer to Oxford Street/Covent Garden/Soho than Connaught.

I think London as a whole is more tolerrant towards queer and I don't think you have much to worry if at International eg. yesterday was coming back at midnight saw 2 guys kissing goodnight outside on the steps to the hall. so everyones cool abt it.

anyway hoped i helped joshy boy as you asked about international hall earlier.

You have a PS2 in your bar? Goddamn Commonwealth is soo crap
I know which Halls I'm applying for next year in January.

Leifde, is the international halls all international students? how many(like...half...2 thirds..1 third, whatever) would you say are uk vs non-uk? i'm just wondering, it looks nice, but i want to get to know english kids too and not just other internationals if i do end up in london
Reply 17
at international hall i'd say the mix is actually about 50-50 international v. uk. i've met many people of both types so no need to worry. the staff always try to achieve this balance every year
Racism!

50/50? Compared to LSE that looks terribly unfair to the international people.
