Public School vs. Private School

What's your opinion on the whole "Private school kids are alot brighter than public school kids" ?

Did you or do you attend a private school or public school? Or have you attened both? Do you think you could have done better if you would of attended a private school rather than public? Would you have rather of attended a public school?

I'm attending a public school at moment & studying IB. [ not for much longer because it's getting closed down ! ]

In my opinion it's the student's co-operation rather than the school. But of course I would say that because I attend a public school.

I went to a state school and ended up with three A's at A Level so I'm not going to complain! It had a lot of bad points, and teaching would probably have been better at a private school, but it would have been pointless my parents paying such high fees only for me to end up with the same grades as I got anyway. At the end of the day I think it's down to the person. If you're clever, you're likely to do well wherever you go. I'm not saying I have anything against people who went to a private school though!

It also depends where you live, i know people from England who have come down here to Wales who have asked my family which private school shall we send our kids to? And we say send them to state school...they're just as good down here. In a state school close by about 10 people got straight As at A level this year...

I think it's both the pupils attitude and the opportunities they're given. And also the environment, if you're in a school where no one cares about work or doing well, then you're less likely to care.

I think its all about peer group, i think in your early teens peer group is very important. I know lots of "nice" people that went off the rails and mucked up their gcse's.

I attended a mixture of state and private school. State primary, private secondary and a state college for sixth form.

I think at a good state school you can do really well and plenty of people do, but if you live in a bad area state schools can be attrotious. not because of the teachers and facilities but because of the pupils attitudes and backgrounds. Being in that environment no matter hor bright you are isn't a good thing.

I couldn't have asked for any more from the state primary school and college i went too. i think i wouldn't have done any better had i been in a private school during those years. I also diddn't think there was much difference between the pupils at private and state schools. But i think i was lucky because of the area i lived in and also due to the fact that at college most of the disruptive people have been filtered out.

The private school im attending now has so many more opportunities generally, not just academically.. my old (public) school - it was 'uncool' to do anything like that..
People's attitude to learning
Teaching quality
Facilities and opportunities
are the key differences in my opinion
Private school kids arent brighter theyve just been fortunate enough to enjoy a higher standard of education.

loads of people nowadays get all As.It isnt that hard to get As in A levels.
It is not the grades that are important it is the activities private school offers to its students,e.g. more clubs, sport and etc. Private schools take care of its students better. People at private schools are much friendlier than at comprehensives. No chavs at private schools.I hate chavs.

they arent brighter by genetics, but they will become brighter and richer, because they practice their brains all the time and try to be better and better, by competiting with each others.

However I would have preferred to go to a priavte school. A much more interesting social mix.

Really? I'd have thought there'd be more of a mix at state schools

I really don't agree with that, its also a huge generalisation.

I go to a private school and have had an amazing education from some truly inspiring teachers. However I have met quite a lot of people from grammar schools and comprehensives who are remarkably bright and hard workers. Personally, I think part of the reason I've done alright in the academic field is because of the quality of the teaching at my school but a negative point about going to a private school is that a lot of the kids tend to be arrogant and snobbish. My mates who have gone to state run schools are usually much friendlier and down to earth but in the end, that's only my perspective on things.

I was answering the question 'Could I have done better if I went to a private school' and, unless I took more A Levels, the answer is no. State schools have sports clubs, etc too. I certainly don't feel like I've been held back in any way! Have you ever been to a comprehensive school? Because you're coming across as a complete snob, and a bit on a idiot to be honest.

Precisely. So in otherwords we can state that when Parents say they spent x amount on their son or daughter solely for the efforts in academia, they really wouldn't be telling the whole truth. It's more than just an education which is probably why most parents would send the kids their. If it was for the sole reason of education, I would suspect many parents would try getting their kids into grammar school.

I'd say on average state school pupils that attain the same grades as private ones are harder workers.

Only the dedicated do really well at state schools, the social atmosphere does not promote high achievement so only those really keen can get top grades.

I laugh at debates like this. My exam results could not possibly have been better at a private school.

That was my point!
I went to a 'normal' primary up until the age of 7, I have boarded since.

TBH, I can't imagine myself if I hadn't have gone through the public (public schools = independent! STATE schools are for the general public. I'm not being arsey, but there's a difference). I am confident and outgoing now, I have been 'nurtured' from a very young age and allowed to develop in an environment where they encourage reaching personal goals and where they encourage personal development and growth.

I have friends at 'home' who are in college now, some are at public schools and some are still in their state schools. I believe as long as you are able to mix across a wide range of social backgrounds and integrate yourself into the persons that you come across then you have a stable background for life. Going to a public school has enabled me to do this, whilst having a decent understanding of society around me.

I sometimes resent going to public school, I am not as motivated and determined as those I know who have been through the state system. I've never had to work to achieve goals, I've never had to work to achieve grades. Pretty much everything has been handed to us on a silver platter, we just had to learn what we were taught. If I had been to a state school I wouldn't expect so much from my parents, I wouldn't expect to have the life I lead, I wouldn't expect to have friends like they are. I have never known what it's like to have a struggle to achieve university, not simply because it is expected of me.

:shrugs: Sometimes I think I'd have liked to experience something and to have achieved it because of my bloody hard work. Then again, I look back on the privileged life I've had with my horses and hockey and think I have been lucky and try not to take it for granted.

Private school gives you a grounding for life that a state school will never to be able to. They give the child the attention that they rightly deserve, rather than trying to control those which are unstable and distruptive. They give opportunities and networking which helps you hugely when you leave the 'fold' and head off into the world.

I'll miss my school so much, I've been there the best part of 11 years (bar leaving for a year but then coming back!) and it's the best thing I've ever done
