Hey, how much do you know about the legit. and illetigitimacy themes throughout the whole book? any chance you could give me some info that you know about? thanks, seb

I am studying Wise Children at the moment and we have just started Chapter 4. I love the irony of the so called 'legitimate' twins when they are infact illegitimate. The rols of fathers I feel is an on going theme throughout the novel.

My favourite character has to be Grandma Chance at the moment, it is just her attitude.

In Chapter Three look out for all the humour methods (slapsick, parody etc)

Basically that is all I have from the top of my hea without dragging my folder out the bag.

Maybe we can compare notes since we are both in the same boat... Tis a suggestion

You just simply read through the novel and take notes on where people have been at certain times etc. and you come to that conclusion, plus everyone else is saying it so it is true.

i'm also studying wise children and finding the essays ridiculous. (most probably because i'm thick)
we've had the essay title of "consider the importance and presentation of perry in the novel". i can't find an awful lot to write! any help would be great, thanks x

i wouldn't worry too much bout Perry, the exam question was on him last year, its very unlikely to be the same character again x x x

Well that one's really easy! You've got the actual illegitimacy of birth, and the appearance of I&S's legitimacy which is then dashed to pieces. You've also got the question mark over M&P's own parentage.

Then you've got the contrast of Shakespearean theatre to music halls.

The importance of appearances, and that N&D are aware of this and choose to go against them. Grandma Chance's tenuous grip on respectable appearances.

Location: Hazard's have big grand house, Chance's have crappy little terranced house in Brixton, but in Bard Road which blurs that distinction slightly. N&D have their bit of legitimacy when they are in The Dream as it's "proper" filming, but it's only an adaptation, and ends up eventually showing in a fleapit theatre.

Gorgeous George brings all the different forms of legitimacy together: physical, social, appeared.

There's a LOT to get on with and I think you know that really.

****

Smile, never mind about your class. I understand how you feel about it but when you look at it there are lots of obvious things in the book, and what you could do, if work isn't really happening, is make sure you look through all the threads on here about Wise Children, and perhaps have a go at making notes for the essays that we're doing. Not actually writing the essays as that would increase your work load a lot, but making notes and thinking about what you would do.

is gorgeous george legitimate or illigitimate? he performs bawdy music hall comedy, lowbrow so illegitimate, yet has a tatoo of the British Empire. Doesn't imperialism represent legitimacy in Wise Children?

what does lilac symbolise. if you've got the vintage version, its mentioned on pages 83-86, 172, 198 and 225. I think its something to do with love/nostalgia but im not really sure

What does this quote mean:
The triumph of nature over nurture, ducky. Only goes to show (pg 28)
is Dora dismissing the idea that nature determines who we become?

also, im not sure i understand Grandma Chance's theory on the war (pg 28). is she saying that the old men kill the young men off so they can sleep with the women??

Either I'm goin mad or somewhere is Wise children there is a quote saying something like;
'mother, that a biological fact whereas father is a movable feast'
I cant for the life of me find it though, if anyone knows I'd appreciate it thanks peacenik x

some random quotes for melchior:
nothing in the world except his dark eyes…and a toy crown
That wonderful old smile
‘Our greatest living Shakespearian’
he yearned for new fields to conquer
a permanent stage set
he still didn’t want anything to do with us
he was splendid over the short haul but would never go the distance
that indigestible mix of emotions I always felt
Perhaps Melchior was fond of him, after all
He kept his profile at an angle so the cameras wouldn’t shoot his double chin, he couldn’t help it, it was in his blood
I fear our father’s softening of the heart was not unconnected to the softening of his brain
he’d got problems of his own where his family was concerned
he started to cash in on his own fame

importance wise, he demonstrates the themes of illegitimacy/cultural imperialism/high culture vs low culture/fathers/social class/twins. theres loads you can say about his importance but presentation wise, im not so sure. ill have a think and get back to you
