Hmm I've always maintained that any city with 'ming' in the middle cant be any good.

Im applying to UCL, KCL and Newcastle, possibly StAndrews and Glasgow, anyone know which of these and others have good facilities and teams in Rowing?

<anecdote>

our current boat club captain was captain at glasgow as an undergrad - so i imagine they're reasonable.

but otherwise, haven't heard much of any of your other unis from regatta/Heads results etc. & of the non oxbridge unis it's Brookes, Nottingham and Imperial that stand out thinking of people i've met/GB trialists.

why not look up results of college 8 type races at Henley..?

am procrastinating & done it for you - Visitors Challenge Cup this year http://www.hrr.co.uk/thisyear/results/rvisitors.htm Brookes, Imperial & Durham are the only English university finalists.
in terms of student men coxed fours http://www.hrr.co.uk/thisyear/results/rstudent.htm again its Imperial, Durham & Brookes of the non Oxbridge. although the Uni of London as a composite also qualified - so if you went to GKT/UCL & were of a high enough standard perhaps UOL would be viable?

(assume you're male here - but can check females ones too if you want!)

& for a potentially more informed opinion will ask the boyf if he knows about the BCs of your choices.

Best post ever! You are a sweetie.
Imperial won't do as I'm no sientist, Durham as I'm not Oxbridge reject, but I'll look into Brookes. Only thing is I live in Oxford. If all my other choices fail 3 yrs spent rowing might be fun...

The quality of teams must vary year to year though, surely? I know that Newc has a yearly race with Durham and so must take it quite seriously.

you can do rowing at basically every uni. i do it a warwick which isn't particularly well known for it but we have a lot of fun and it is taken seriously. we even have a GB rower in our men's senior team this year which is pretty cool, especially since he's a first year and he's pretty hot.

 you're welcome.

whoops, forgot about imperial being science only!

well, if you're a serious rower (i.e. first boat at school? national junior trials?) then Brookes might suit for that aspect, they seem very strong, normally making semis/finals at Henley & quite a few GB Junior/Senior squad. & if you're into coaching/fancy making some money there are ~30-40 BCs in Oxford, plenty of which seem to have brookes student coaches. can understand wanting to move area - but from a student POV, Oxford is probably quite different to being a local..

i imagine there's some fluctuation, yes. but should still think there are some general trends - what with it becoming self perpetuating that high standard rowers are drawn to certain unis, & more prestigious/'better' uni boat clubs will have bigger endowment funds/better facilities/attract better coaches etc.

not to say you won't have fun anywhere & oodles of unis do have boatclubs, but since you asked i imagine you're fairly seriously into it..?

oh & asked re Glasgow - apparently they are pretty good - but don't compete much in the english regatta esque circuit, which would probably account for me not knowing much!

My brother was captain of the Glasgow uni rowing team about 8 years ago. I remember they used to do quite well...*random* those were the days!

Durham appears to be good for rowing.

I am not a student there, but the amount of times they are out on the boats when I am on the River Wear fishing at 6am in the middle of winter shows that they have dedication at least

*Mumbles about boats getting too close and nearly dragging fishing rods in*

Hmm al taken on board and greatly appreciated  Im actually still a novice but am enjoying it a great deal, and hopefully going to get to competing standard sometime, its something I'd like to do at uni.
