I didn't realize how much people from different countries absolutely hate and resent the country that I absolutely love until I came across a post in this student website.

I know I am going to get bashed for this post, but I am already aware of that and am fine with that fact since I just want to understand other countries views.

I am American and I do know that our country isn't the best, but I am still proud to be born and raised here. For all of those who dislike me just because I am one, all I have to say is that you should really travel to see our country, to meet people here our different communities and backgrounds, and just to get to know more us instead of bashing us head on. I apologize for my rambling on, but if you were in my position what would you think? say? or even do?

I want to know what you dislike about my country and why? Please don't be too harsh, I am not trying to insult or piss off anyone. I am merely asking the question to understand peoples views and hear different opinions.

UK gets bashed on American forums too. Who do you think invented the term britfag? I am not even British, but I understand a bit why they are harsh.

I actually didn't know that or have heard that term, but I can definitely understand that since that is along the same lines as to why I chose to sign up for this forum instead of an American forum.

You're entitled to like your country. I'm entitled not to. Here's why (a few choice reasons, there are many more)

1.) You are home to more extreme religious fanatics / right-wing nutjobs per capita than any other country since Nazi Germany (with the possible exception of Iran).
2.) For the past 100 years you have flouted the sovereignty of countless other nations to further your own aims, values and religion.
3.) Recently, you set off a war which has cost hundreds of thousands of lives, and we still don't know why you did it.
    4.) You re-elected Bush
5.) The Americans we get to see abroad tend to be loud, arrogant and somewhat brutish.
    6.) You're sore losers.
7.) Some of you actually listen to Glenn Beck.
8.) Others amongst you considered voting for the bimbo-***-lunatic that is Sarah Palin.
9.) You are a country built on immigration, and yet you are now doing your best to persecute immigrants.
    oh and
10.) Despite the guaranteed right to freedom of speech, the liberty which is mentioned so often as sacred in your consitution, and so many other big statements, when a normal, everyday man tries to expose your inner dealings to the public, your leaders accuse him of terrorism and start an international manhunt for him.
11.) Socialism is practically a swearword in your country.

Of course no one is perfect, so here's a few reasons I do like your country.

1.) You are home to some of the most intelligent, witty and kind people in the world.
2.) You are home to the worlds finest universities.
    3.) You elected Obama
    4.) Family Guy
5.) Great TV in general actually
6.) American football (not quite as good as rugby but still awesome)
7.) You have an astounding amount of places that have amazing natural beauty.
    8.) NYC

In my opinion, it's stupidly narrow-minded to dislike someone soley on account of their country of origin. Cultures differ, but that's no reason to tar all people in one country with the same brush.
There are stereotypes and charicatures about most nationalities. For example, while some people might view all Americans as obese and dumb, the English might be percieved as snobby tea drinkers, the French as smelly and the Swiss as a nation obsessed with nothing but watches and cheese. All ridiculous notions, of course.
Most people I've encountered, upon actually meeting someone from a different country are able to put aside various vague opinions they have on the country and judge that individual on their actual personality and own merits, rather than jumping to conclusions. There are the odd few that seem to think it's acceptable to voice assumptions...

I'm sad to hear you've come across people ****ging off your country, OP. I thought we were a nation of tolerance
What kind of remarks have you had to put up with?

It doesn't effect my mood. I just want to understand others better. The more opinions I recieve the more knowledge on the situation I recieve. It's more so I can be better educated on this topic since I was never fully aware of this beforehad. You are right though, I may just delete this thread after I read a few more opinions.

Your foreign affairs policies all end in disasters, you end up with ridiculous people taking power (George Bush, the momentum the Tea Party's been gaining, even Obama isn't that great, but relative to most politicians he's OK), as a nation you have so many ridiculous extremes from ultra-conservative backwards religious nuts to idiotic gun-wielding maniacs, you practically worship a constitution written to solve the problems that faced a nation hundreds of years ago and there are a large number of Americans who are just, in general, very rude. None of the above might apply to you, and there are some similar problems with the British, but that's why we don't really like you.

I'm afraid you find ignorant people everywhere, don't get worked up about it, you're just giving whoever wrote what offended you what they wanted.

Britfag was invented on 4chan where the common practice is to call oneself a fag.

I've been hit with alot of comments. We are a nation of tolerance, I just want to know more of what others opinions are. It will not defeat my love for this country since it is my home country. I've experienced so many good things about this country that I cannot ignore. :/ My original post may just get me into more trouble and arguments, but what can I say? I can't learn about topics like this if I don't try to understand the opinions of others on it.

Hating countries wastes far too much time.

Why hate a country of people you haven't met? There are reasons to disagree with what the government/specific people do. But hate a country, what is this nonsense?

But yeah, Americans have cool accents, they make good/funny TV and their youtubers are hillarious. They make good video games too. They have good music, and yeah.

The whole hating a country... pointless. Get a hobby.

I dont dislike the country or the people just some of the people that are so patriotic that it comes of as sheer ignorance, especially when you get told "America the best country in the world", or "We saved your asses in the war" which isnt even true.

I have no issue with being patriotic but when it makes your deluded into thinking every one is below you then thats when they become hated.

Lol! Believe me I do not like the thought of Sarah Palin whatsoever. Met her many times and I definitely have many reasons to dislike her.

Have you seen her show? I have to admit they have made Alaska look very gorgeous but.....

Why the hell do you need to 'learn' about this 'topic'? Are you really ignorant enough to believe that everyone in the world thinks the sun shines out of America's backside? Some people are (rather ignorantly) not going to like America, just how some French don't like Spain and some Japanese don't like Russians.
