I've been playing rugby for the past 7 years and as I'm on my Gap Year, I thought I'd try out a new sport. I boxed briefly a few years ago, and loved it but would ultimately like to try MMA.

I'm 5'11 and 96kgs and have found a beginners course near me.

As I'm completely new to it, I was wondering if anyone could give me hints/tips?

I'll be going within the next fortnight and was also wondering what adequate training gear I need?

    Thanks

I do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and cross-train in Western Boxing. I'd recommend that you take a grappling art as a base and supplement it with a striking art rather than going to an MMA class fulltime. I'd also suggest that you choose one area on which to focus yor training around (I'd recommend grappling). You could, for example, go to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday then take a boxing class on one of the off-days and a sparring-intensive MMA class on another. This is just what I do, but hopefully this gives an idea of what you can do.
