Ok, well here's my input:
I'm not much of a big drinker. In fact, I'm probably one of the people in my group of friends who drinks the least. For example, I've just got back from my friend's house, there were about 6 of us sitting around and some of them had a couple of shots, but I declined; didn't feel the need. I most certainly do not need alcohol to have a good time. I'm naturally extroverted, and have a laugh generally, so I don't need to alcohol to make me confident.
However, that is not to say I do not drink. The last two weekends out of three I have been drinking, because one was a sort of mellowed out house-party and the other was drinking in Latvian bars (Riga!). So I do drink, because it does make things seem funnier and it is rather boring to be sober when others are pissed. Very boring in fact, and slightly annoying. I don't need alcohol to have fun; but drinking moderately does make things seem funnier. However, I hate it when people drink for the sake of getting drunk. Smashed/wasted etc. It is not cool to be pissed to the point of regurgitation. It is not cool to be so drunk that people become aggressive. I am a happy drunk - I basically ramble crap, which is what I do usually only to an exaggerated state. I also will not drink if I don't like the taste of that drink, why do people drink things that "taste like sh*t".
So, yes, I do drink when I'm out with friends, but not all the time. Yes, drinking does lower inhibition and incite fun, but yes, I can have huge fun without booze. No, I don't drink brands which I find repulsive. And no, I don't drink to the point of losing control, nausea etc. But yes, being sober when others are pissed is crap. But I only ever get tipsy not out-and-out pissed.
