I totally agree with this, I have tried so hard to get into university, i went to the 30th worst school in the country, and had to go for a extra 2 years of education and work quite a few years (hease the my age) to get where i am. yet they didn't even have to try to be there! i just like to get on with things and spend my time with my husband, yet it seems so hard to make friends inside the university because they seem so immature to me.

OTOH if you go to a university with a high proportion of working class students - typically these are the post '92 unis, there's a lot of people who don't seem to know what they're there for and have pretty low expectations of themselves.

Uni you're rewarded for basically showing off - but often working class students have just come through a 12 years of a system that rewards you for fitting in and not standing out or showing off.

I am a mature student, very mature and well past 23 :smile:

Edinburgh does tend to have a bit of a problem because it attracts a very middle class social group who didn't get into Oxbridge. However there are many students there who are from quite diverse backgrounds. Just because people are on the same course doesn't mean that they have anything in common.

It's not easy for me - I've worked a long time and have a mortgage etc. I don't expect to make close friends just get on with people. I ignore the snobs, you find them everywhere, and socialise through my hobbies - films, theatre, art etc.

The most important thing about Uni is to get the best qualification you can and move on. One day you'll wonder why you cared because many friendships started at Uni don't last for 20 years - unlike in the movies :smile:

Turn the other cheek and be better than these people. Don't end up like so many people with a less privileged background at places like Edinburhg - with a massive chip on your shoulder. It only harms you in the long run.

I know exactly what you mean. I moved from a secondary school which had a reputation for being chavvy (I didn't think it was, I loved it there) to a posher 6th form. It's like they think I'm from another planet. Really gets on my nerves. Especially when the only reason they're stuck up is because they have more money. I'm worried uni's going to be the same though :s-smilie:
