# Empirical Formula help please. Watch

1. Analysis of a compound of sulphur shows that 1.78g of the sulphur present is combined with 0.89g of oxygen and 3.98g of chlorine.

Calculate the empirical formula of this compound.

-divde by smallest number that you get from the last part.

Yeah I did but the answer I got seems wrong.

here's my working

S - O - C
1.78 - 0.89 - 3.98
------ = ------- = ------
32.1 16 35.5

0.0554 - 0.0556 - 0.112
--------- = ----------- = --------
0.0554 - 0.0554 - 0.0554

1 - 1 (3.sf) - 2 (2.021....)

S C2 O ? is that right?

The only thing wrong is the symbol for chlorine = Cl not C

The compound SOCl2 is perfectly valid

yup-

although, give it as SOCl2, present it in the order they give in the question.
