    Hi

So I want to say, "The Berlin Wall was necessary for communism, because without it everybody would have left." My question is, in a formal context, which verb, auswandern or abhauen (or something else) would be best? I think abhauen is a bit stronger, but maybe it's too slangy?

Die Berliner Mauer war erforderlich um Kommunismus zu schützen, weil ohne die Mauer jemanden abgehaut hätten.

Sorry for any/all other mistakes in my German

Edit: I think perhaps this should be in the translation thread?

I probably wouldn't use abhauen and auswandern is used more in the context of to migrate but I suppose you could get away with using it.

The last bit should be "weil ohne die Mauer, haetten alle...." I think.

Definitely "auswandern" or "fliehen". "Abhauen" is too slangy.

Thank you for all of your help! Fliehen seems to be the best option.
