I'm on the list. I had one meeting last year, and it seems pretty useless to me. They don't even update the lists. There are people who've left, or dropped certain subjects, and they're still considered "gifted and talented" in those subjects. Really, I just ignore it. No-one at my school actually cares.

Agreed. I mean, I'm all for giving the top kids a little extra credit, but it seems a bit pointless to make this big deal out of it and get us all signed up and getting posted stuff when it doesn't really mean anything anyway.
Massive waste of money that I'd rather have had invested into schools in general...

. My english teacher is german, my chemistry teacher is nigerian and my maths teacher is czech. I'm not being racist or whatever but they're all terrible teachers and none of them can speak english properly. Also my ict teacher just suddenly left for no reason while the head of the department is suspended for inappropriate conduct. The government needs to invest in our schools, not in Ireland!!!

I remember being part of the Able, Gifted and Talented program for history at my secondary school. All I remember about it was that we had to do some form of presentation to the rest of the class to show how much more intelligent we were than them.

Our school does quite a bit for the G&T kids (for years 12 and 13 anyway). From what I've heard they're going to take us to oxbridge open days and introduce us to all sorts of programmes. I've applied to so many already! They send us emails when something comes up and I think the school pays for all of it like this one http://www.giftltd.co.uk/files/grendonemail2.pdf

No, but when I got picked in first year they didn't have facilities so you might as well say I didn't get to get involved.

I'm apparently gifted in langauges and English literature, but all I got to do was do a really embarassing presentation about books to the rest oft he class in year 10. Bad memories... Although, the head of languages does mentor me, but she offered to, it wasn't because of the programme thing.

It's the school prioritising the people who they think will be high fliers. If you're not in there, work harder; it's worth it.

I was in YGT and NAGTY and all that ever got for me was reproaches from the school about me underperforming. Didn't look so great for them if one of their 'identified' pupils was bored all the time. I went to a couple of local sessions, I'm not sure they were affiliated with YGT, it was another gifted program. My primary school was too small to host any sort of program like that, but I was on a list there too, vaguely to do with that sort of thing. I thought the NAGTY stuff was for English, I won prizes and things for that, but apparently it was overall Year 7 performance and CATs tests, that stuff.
Reading these replies, I'm surprised I wasn't struck off the list in Year 9 once things started going downhill, but I was getting the newsletter into Year 11 and teachers were telling me about trips and things, so I assume I'm still on a register, somewhere...

Think I'll stop bragging now...

But I think NAGTY just missed its purpose completely. Wasn't it set up to stimulate pupils more in school? And instead what they do is offer workshops outside of school hours, which are interesting but just one-offs. If the school makes a big enough deal out of it, all it does is separate you. In lessons you've still got to sit there and be bored stiff.

Why did you get kicked off it?
I remember them doing it at my secondary school, i wasnt part of it but i knew people that were. As far as i know they didnt really do much.
