Everybody says China's military is outdated, had poor training and poorly equipped. However, now they say they have the ability of sink US aircraft carriers and their missiles are state of the art etc. So what is it? is China the country which has the outdated miltiary or the country which has the power to challenge US?

Won't be long before the missile is counted by the Americans. China is still no where near the US militarily

A bit of both I think. With the size of the Chinese army, they'll kind of inevitably be left with some cold war relics, but China are developing fast; there's no doubt about it. With the progress of their space programme, it seems very plausible that they have such a missile.

'State of the art' with regards to military equipment is a misnomer - the nature of the work is that you don't know what the other guys have due to the level of secrecy involved.

The missiles might be good, but the theoretic capability has existed for a long time and was held by the Soviets in the 80s, so it's nothing new.

It's easy to sink a US carrier: nuke it.

The fact that everyone ignores is that China completely tramples over the US when it comes to cyber warfare and so it doesn't even matter if the US have a better drilled army; that won't be where the war's at, if there is one. Still, nice to know so many people find comfort in believing the old 'West is best' adage.

The economist had a massive piece on china this week and apparently thats not the case.

The US may have crap security but there is a reason you hear about Chinese attempts but nothing about what the USA is doing. Anyway look at that virus that attacked the Iranian nuclear plants which was rumoured to be American, it was very very highly sophisticated

Hah. The Economist also ran a similar article a few months previously stating the contrary to be the case. The Chinese have always been at the forefront of technology and in terms of hacking, you'd be hard pressed to find other countries with the capabilities that China has (perhaps Japan or some parts of the Philippines). I'd suggest the American was a single case and perhaps not even working for the government. The simple facts are that China has invested more in cyber warfare than the US and that's why much of the Western media as well as our governments are terrified of the Chinese force. If warfare was solely based on the battlefield, America wouldn't bow down nearly as much as it does today.

You overestimate Chinese strength and underestimate American abilities.

While the ChiComms might have built on their cyber abilities, a lot of the country's infrastucture remains outdated, weak and poorly connected, rendering them easy targets for an American airborne strike - capabilties which are by a long way the best in the world.

Any war plans that exist for the attack/war with China [which will almost definitely exist, any/every eventuality is no doubt planned for] the American warplanners will play to their strengths - and will attack the weaknesses of the ChiComms. Both of which are much better known to them than any internet hypothesisor or journalist.

I don't disagree that China has poor infrastructure and on-the-ground orgnaisation. In this respect, America is absolutely the victor but let us, for the moment, assume that China does have the most advanced 'cyber army'. Through hacking, a government can essentially bring down the infrastructure of another and close down whole power lines, making travel impossible. So the infrastructure and organisation you speak of, whilst there in the US, would be heavily crippled if technology were to take a blow from the Chinese.

Of course, you are correct. Only the Chinese and the American respective armies will really know their own strengths. All we can do is speculate.

The Americans owe a lot of money to China and make it grow richer every day. I don't see why the Chinese would kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.
