Is the University of Surrey looked down upon for being a polytech? Its ranked 20th in the Guardian and is very highly reviewed by students.

Oh you can bet someone looks down on it.

What you want to think about is if it's going to be looked down on by someone who might give you a job tbh... and then it's going to depend on what course you do and what sort of job you're looking for afterwards.

When people look down on ex polys there are usually referring to the group of unis/ex polys in 1992. Surrey was not apart of them and gained uni status almost 35 years prior.

I'm sure someone does, although I don't believe Surrey is an ex-poly, at least not in the same way as the post-1992 unis.

    No, because it wasn't.

Well, it was - began as Battersea Polytechnic Institute, then became a 'College of Advanced Technology' in the mid-fifties, moved to Guildford and expanded, then the Robbins Report in 1963 made all Colleges of Advanced Technology universities - but became a uni long before the post-1992 'ex-poly' unis, so isn't included with them.

Well I was certainly not thinking further back than the 1960s
