Andy Gray and Martin Tyler mentioned a Geoff Shreeves interview with Sir Alex Ferguson... Where he apparently said with a straight face "The match, being postponed is probably a good thing, because the majority of our fans journey from the South... I wasn't actually aware that he made such comments and I'm not entirely sure whether he was criticising such people... Either way, I can't help but laugh... I just want to know people's thoughts on SAF's statement.

I personally can't stand such people, as they should surely be supporting a southern team such as Tottenham, Arsenal, West Ham, Chelsea, ... I believe that these people are glory hunters, and get so p***** off that people say because I'm a United fan, I must be a glory hunter... When the truth is, my dads' side of the family are United fans, because my grandads' nephew (my dads' cousin) used to captain United in the 70's... Martin Buchan... I'm 17 years of age and live in St. Helens (a town inbetween Liverpool and Manchester)... The reason for not supporting teams like Liverpool and Everton is that I have always despised scousers, I just hold the very narrow-minded attitude that they are scum (sorry for any offence caused, but I'm at the age where my thoughts cannot be adjusted)... Also, I chose not to support Wigan, because, living in St. Helens, a very successful Rugby town... Wigan are hated where I'm from, so any affiliation with such club would be a sin...

Can you not read? I have legitimate reasons for supporting them, not just the silver-ware they have won... Which is what seems to attract the cockney ****-bags...

(Original post by Nick Hornby, in Fever Pitch)
"The white south of England middle-class Englishman and woman is the
most rootless creature on earth; we would rather belong to any other
community in the world. Yorkshiremen, Lancastrians, Scots, the Irish,
blacks, the rich, the poor, even Americans and Australians have
something they can sit in pubs and bars and weep about, songs to sing,
things they can grab for and squeeze hard when they feel like it, but we
have nothing, or at least nothing we want. Hence the phenomenon of
mock-belonging, whereby pasts and backgrounds are manufactured and
massaged in order to provide some kind of acceptable cultural identity.
Who was it that sang “I Wanna Be Black”? The title says it all, and
everybody has met people who really do: in the mid-seventies, young,
intelligent and otherwise self-aware white men and women in London
began to adopt a Jamaican patois that frankly didn’t suit them at all.
How we all wished we came from the Chicago Projects, or the Kingston
ghettos, or the mean streets of north London or Glasgow! All those
aitch-dropping, vowel-mangling punk rockers with a public school
education! All those Hampshire girls with grandparents in Liverpool or
Brum! All those Pogues fans from Hertfordshire singing Irish rebel
songs! All those Europhiles who will tell you that though their mothers
live in Reigate, their sensibilities reside in Rome!"
    That's why.

Read the top of the quote xD

I love Nick Hornby. Pretty much everything he says is so true.

Unless you meant the website, in which case it was some legally shady Brazilian PDF transcription of the entire book... just google the quote.

Happens in every country. I'm currently living in the Ruhrgebeit in Germany home to many top flight German teams including Schalke and Dortmund. However, I've lost count at the number of times I've seen kids wearing FC Bayern shirts - I'm quite sure that not all these people are Bavarian emigres.

Makes me lol. What qualifies someone as a gloryhunter? Is there a geographical cut off point? And what is the source of legitimacy for being a real fan?

The amount of times I've been called a glory-hunter. I don't even let it phase me anymore - opposing fans would have you think United have no 'genuine' fans and we must all be in it for the trophies.

Personally I would say those travelling from the south are bigger fans than the supposed "true manchester fans".

Think about it, the regular visitors to matches travel all that way and back to support their team, it would be different if they were all talk and sat at home to watch every game.

As for your narrow minded attitude that all scousers are scum that is supposedly non-adjustable. Grow up.
