For my application to attend a HeadStart course I had to get a reference of my physics teacher who said 'although quiet contributes well'. Do you think being called 'quiet' is a bad thing in a reference?

I would say I am quiet and think being called quiet looks bad. However if quiet means 'gets on with work and doesn't disrupt the class' then surely it isn't a bad thing.

I think it's a precarious situation, because someone people will take quiet to be a good, industrious person and some will take it to be a shy, timid person with no personality.

If you can, ask him to change it.

I think the "but contributes well" ballances out any potential issues with the word "quiet" but if you are unhappy with it ask them to change it

The use of the word 'although' shows that being quiet is a negative in my teachers eyes.
