I have applied to do Comp Sci at Oxford, York, Southampton, and Warwick, but also for Maths and Linguistics at York. I am seriously considering the final option if I fail to get into Oxford. Does anybody on here do Maths & Linguistics, or Linguistics? Oh and by the way I am in my gap year and have unconditional offers for all of them but Oxford.

I think that Maths & Linguistics could be more interesting, but also that I the phonetics/phonology rubbish in Linguistics could be very dull, and that the maths might be too difficult for me.

How easy is maths? (I have done further maths and got an A, but did pretty poorly in FP3 got a C so I'm not sure how easy I'd find university level maths)
    How interesting is linguistics?
Any helpful info would be much appreiated.

If I got into Oxford but decided I would rather do Maths, do you know if there are any precedents of switching from Comp Sci to Maths?

I don't study it but I've also applied for Maths & Linguistics at York, I've only heard of one other person who's applied for it too!

If you don't think you'll enjoy certain parts of the Linguistics you can always focus more on the maths in the later years as you can either leave it as a 50/50 split or choose to basically Major in one. If you have a look on their website in the languages department it tells you more

Have you done any Linguistics at college? If so how did you find it? I've never studied it before but I just thought it looked so interesting so went for it

Also, have you heard back from them at all? Good luck!

Hey. I haven't done Linguistics, no but I have done Latin, and French AS, and Latin in particular is linguisticy.

I have heard and have an unconditional offer. Apparently there's Maths open days, but not, it would seem linguistics ones :/

Would you say it's your first choice? Is Maths & Linguistics available elsewhere?

Hey, I literally just got an offer for this after posting my comment! Yay ABB conditional.

Hmm... I don't know if it's my first choice to be honest, I think I'm only going to be able to decide when I go to see the unis again. I've only got one other offer so far and that's at Liverpool for Mathematical Sciences - I really like it there too so I really don't know!

I think Edinburgh is the only other UK uni that offers the course, but I haven't applied there. I've just applied for Maths everywhere else.

I'm studying French A level at the moment, and went on a French course where we did some linguistics and I loved it! Was so interesting and really quite exciting!

Ah, that's a shame cos I'd like to go on a linguistics open day to find out a bit more about it. I haven't heard about the Maths open days yet, but as I said, I only received my offer today so hopefully will soon

It is possible to switch between subjects at Oxford provinding your tutors are prepared to let you go and the tutors of the course you want to switch to are happy to teach and extra person and think you're good enough. There is a Maths and Comp Sci course which you may prefer and which it may be easier to switch to.
