CAS is a load of B*** anyone agree?

Hey
Ive just started my IB programm this september and i really rushed into it-only placed my application this March and got accepted in August so i didnt really know what i was letting myself in for. Then they told us about the 150 hrs of CAS we have to do- max of 15 hrs on any one activity. Ive been an Air Cadet for the past 3 years and i absolutely love it, am interested in joining the RAF as a career but the IBO does not recognise the ATC or cadets in general as a Service/Action activity. Was wondering if anyone had any advice or was in the same situation or anything like that?

Are you serious? They don't classify the CCF/RAF as Service? Well I think you should debate that with someone because many people doing the IB in my school are involved with the CCF/army,raf,navy.

Yes, CAS is a joke..along with TOK and all the other aspects of the IB that make it special. Whether or not its a joke, you need to complete it to obtain a diploma so the best advice is to get activities quickly and finish the hours in the first year of the IB course.

I dont know anything about You army programs but i think it should count. Ask Your CAS coorduinator to contact Geneva about that. In couple situation my CAS women have done that and everything was clear.

I think CAS is pretty ok, even sometimes it's fun. Try to do group projects. Me and my friends are usually metting doing our CAS project for 2,3, 4 or whatevr hours and later on we spend evening or late afternoon in pub or something. It realy can be fun!!!

TOK sucks !!! this is the biggest waste of time i ever had. But it gives us points on diploma so...

A question: I have been told that We can't do all of our CAS hours at first year that we have to spread it along the whole course. Is true or this is just my school's idea?

Do other activites for CAS. Even though your Air Cadet does not count for CAS, you still can add that to your colledge resime, and CAS actually isn't hard to complete. Just keep your eyes open and you will be fine. That's what I think.

I'm not sure but I heard that TOK is for boosting up your GPA. Is that true?

In my school, we have PreIB(9th and 10th graders) and IB(11th and 12th graders) courses. For preIB, we all have to complete 50 hrs of CAS and 100hrs for IB. Even though you have done 300hrs during the preIB, it won't count for IB.

In the UK, TOK is useless but I guess you do obtain greater analytical skills and an ability to have a more open mind about your subjects, and Oxbridge interviewers have been known to ask one or two applicants what its all about and how it could be applied.

To me, it's just a mark.

hehe that's realy bad they ask things from TOK on the interview. I was sleeping on 5 out of 8 of my TOK classes. They are sooooooo boring.

Anybody started/finished their TOK essay?

I think that CAS isnt hard at all u can do loads of things that u can add to CAS. In my school the project that i liked more was to visit an orphanage and discapated children schools it was very nice.

About TOK yeah we all agree that its soooooooooo boring but for me at least wasnt so so bad because the teacher was nice and didnt have "the control" hahahaha.... just telling her we wanted to watch movies all the time .... and things like that

When you do your personal statement and you have all this stuff you've done it doesn't seem so useless. And it can be an excuse for doing things you like to do anyway- I'm not wasting time, its CAS when you're playing a sport, or whatever. Your school does seem a bit strict though- only 15 hours per activity?!

well i totally disagree with u...

being an IB2, i think that CAS was the greatest thing ever..i was involved in all sorts of things and i really had a great time...well this may be also due to the fact that i had an EXCELLENT CAS COORDINATOR who drove us EVERYWHERE..and we did excellent trips for climbing and all sorts of funny things....
i have 270 hours and i think that it is as if i am doing cas only for 1 month...its great u ll see..

concerning tok..i think that it made me realise who i am an we had such philosophical discussions ..it was excellent!!!

time makes u realise loads od loads of things...

I had a really boring TOK teacher last year, but I changed this year to a much better one. I really think it depends on the teacher- now I like it, but I used to hate it! I still think its kind of a waste of time- I miss studyhall!

I finished all 150 hours of CAS in the first year, the school doesn't seem to mind. Actually, they don't even keep track of what we're doing, we're just expected to get on with it. I think it's easier to do it all in the first year 'cos you can concentrate on your studies in the 2nd year.

That's my point.... this is increadible BS what my school says. If what You say is true I going to make hell in my school. I would already do my CAS if they would let me do my 150 hours. wrrr....

Maybe you can fill in your forms for the 150 hours, then write this year's date on them so it looks like you spread 150 hours over two years

Reply 14

hehe that;s an idea but You know we should be honest as an IB students  besides i'm already in second year so it won't change much.

CAS is a pain, its not too hard to get cas at my school cuz theres alway stuff going on and EVERYONE has to do it... not only IB students in order to graduate, we have to fill these stupid forms at the end of each activity..
An advice... get ur cas done in 11th grade or at least most of it..
My school requires 5 units for each, action, service and creativity .. each unit = 12hrs

Reply 16

Well, your school is lying to you about having to spread CAS over two years! But looks like paulabra's school is even more strict, having to do 5 units of CAS...

What do we actually have to do with those CAS forms at the end? Do we have to hand them in? Does the IBO check them?

Cas is useful depending on one's perspective. My view is that it's just BS, but you can learn to appreciate it if you want to. Unfortunately for me I never had the will nor opportunity to actually start appreciating it, I just BSed through it all in the end inflating the hours that I had done and asking family friends and co. to sign for things that I had never done, me writing out their letters and stuff.

If you learn to sound convincing, if you plan out every conceivable backup plan to avoid problems (such as your CAS coordinator asking you for the telephone number of your supervisor so that he/she can actually telephone and see whever what you have done is true or BS), but especially, if you are desperate enough like me, then you'll manage to fake it very well. But anyhow, guess what, it's probably easier and less painful if you start properly doing cas early. And remember, there are no shades in between when it comes to CAS, you have either done it with respect to the IB requirements or you have not done it and thus failed at it, leaving you into the situation that you won't pass the IB. So just do it early, don't give it your best shot but take it easy, it's not graded or anything, just do it as the IB want's and you'll be fine.

From what I know you need to hand the cas forms (with your reflections for each thing that you did, the supervisor letter that backs you up, and your concluding essay) to the ib coordinator. He/she will check to see that it's satisfactory, and then just tell the IB that you have succesfully completed CAS. He/she will then send your work along with the work of the other people in ur class to the IB in Geneva... But don't take my words for the truth, I could be wrong.

There's a concluding essay? I know we have to fill in those evaluation forms, and we were told we needed some kind of proof that we had completed the activity, e.g. photos, letters, etc. What on earth do you write in a concluding essay? 'I love CAS and wish I could do 300 hours'??
