Vetsix

Is anyone else going to Vetsix in December? I really want to get the details through now  I'm doing the pathology paper section - does anyone know if it will be based on nanotechnology like last years?
I would think the paper would be different. I did the one in 2002 and they've all been different since, I think.

Vetsix is for prospective veterinary students in December Nottingham uni
its a three day or five day course depending on your options

its lectures on various topics which i found really interesting
topics included equine surgery
small animal surgery
animal behaviour- including dogs and horses
reptile care
pregnancy and neonatal care in cattle etc #
i would really recommend it, apparently unis dont like it but you still learn loads which you could talk about at interview

and they cant hate it that much cos i have an interview and i know other people who do and we all put it on our ps
Basically my advice is keep clear of this money sucking fraud process. Vet schools want 3 things:
Good Grades
Knowledge of Veterinary and Agricultural Worlds
Enthusiasm for the course

Not parents that are prepared to buy their little cherub onto the course. VetSix/Vetsim is a scam. Don't get hoodwinked into going on it.

You've got nothing to lose so go for it!

Except, of course, £200 or so. Which, coming up to Christmas, I could think of better uses for
Too right! Did you know they get 1st year vets in only their first few months to 'teach' you clinical knowledge. This is quite ridiculous as you get nothing that could be remotely called clinical until 3rd year. My advice is to find good vets when seeing practice and pester them for (free) advice. Don't go lining the pockets of these business men.
I know what you anti-vetsix people are saying but I went on both Vetsim and Vetsix and found them both really useful, even if it was just giving me a kick up the bum to get loads of work experience. My school has only ever sent one other person to vet school, and thought a couple of weeks at a vets was enough - ha ha i wish. So I went to vetsix, met loads of really great people and realised how hard I was gonna have to work to beat them! You do get a few lectures from vet students, you also get lectures of stuff from qualified vets like What it was like being a vet involved with the whole BSE crisis, and what it's like being a zoo vet. The pathology project is a really good thing to do, but don't pay for the extra lectures if you don't think you'll do it - it's not worth it. But the peeps at my Cam interview were really interested in what I'd done - if you put the work in it might give you the extra edge. As well as vets you also have admissions tutors giving you advice - we had the nottingham guy and a lady from the RVC telling us what they look for and what work exp you need etc. It also gives you a few days of the student lifestyle, gives you a chance to sample uni food (lol) and in my opinion is worth every penny for the info they give you. Yes you can get some info from vets and peeps while you're on work exp, but at the end of the day the vet students who are telling you stuff know where you've been, for them it was just a couple of years ago and they REALLY are helpful. Yes its a little pricey, but worth it in my opinion.
I went on both Vetsix and Vetsim and i'm glad i went

Ok so you won't have a clue about half of what they're rambling on about but as people have said you can definatley pick up some good interview tips. Also i think it gives you a good idea of what you're up against, but most importantly you can make some really good friends and generally just have a fun couple of days  Well worth it IMO

I think it was fantastic, I met loads of people who are interested in the same things as me I keep in touch with them and I'll hopefully meet some at vet school!
I learnt loads, like I didn't really feel I could ask the people I went lambing with about foot and mouth as they were working a 12-14hr day and its a pretty sensitive topic anyway. So hearing about it a vetsix was really useful. I learnt about exotics as well and calving problems you would never see on an average weeks work ex so you maybe wouldnt think to ask the farmer about.
It does cost money but I found it money well spent, and i think a lot of people did

I found out how hard it was going to be just by coming on here... for free :p: lol!! and even though i'm dying to know what you all got told that was soooo great i'm hoping the advice I got from round and about is enough  !! Its not on course requirements and I refuse to pay £200 just to fund a genius business man's (or woman's) fancy lifestyle :motz: ! Hope its not slashed my chances of getting in, but if it has then its all one big con anyway!

They might only use vet students for some stuff but you sure get paid well (believe me i know!) and at least we have experience of going through the admissions process and being at vet school which is what a lot of people want to hear about as it gives them a bit of an idea what to expect. As much as anything vetsix is great fun and you get to meet people who potentially could be in your year. In my opinion you also learn quite a lot and it does help prepare you for an interview. and yes some people might class it all as a waste of time and money but for a lot of people it is well worth going to - particularly if your school isnt much use as many arent.

well I'm really looking forward to it anyways! Whats the accomodation and food like anyone whos been?
accommodation is pretty good (well mine was anyway  ) I had an ensuite room the first time, and sharing one between two the second. Rooms were smallish but comfortable, and the least you get is a wash basin.

Food was absoloutly disgusting but then i'm quite fussy  There is ont much choice for veggies either. Think i basically lived on flapjacks and hot chocolate for 3 days - i have never appreciated my mums cooking so much

But anyway don't let that put you off, you're not going for the cuisine!
