IB and consultancy is something I've recently been very interested in studying after university, I've currently applied through UCAS and want to do the IMB (Information Management for Business) course at UCL. The problem is that even though it's at UCL the required grades are only ABB and it's not as relevant as courses such as business, maths and stats or MORSE. Do I have any chance of competing? What is the usual process?

Also, it's strange, Morgan Stanley are one of the benefactors for the IMB course so I am guaranteed an interview with them at the end of my fourth year so they have obviously shown some interest in the IMB degree... Even so, do I have a chance?

Sorry if this comes across as a stupid question, I'm not knowledgeable in this field at all!

So MS guarantees you an interview for what exactly? Trading? IT? Back office?

Not any department specifically, they just guarantee you an interview for their graduate programmes, it's the same for all companies that have invested money in the ITMB / IMB degree.

How many people are on the course? how and why would they guarantee every single one of you an interview?

TBH I have never heard of any course being guaranteed an interview for any grad job, let alone a place as competitive as MS. The course doesn't have the prestige factor, but at UCL you would get plenty of exposure to bank events and fantastic opportunities to network. It’s really what you make of it.

Maybe I'm reading into this wrongly but I would assume that because they invested money into it they would want to see their returns? The quote:

The Information Technology Management for Business degree framework has been developed by e-skills UK with a consortium of leading companies that include BT, CA, Ford, Fujitsu, HP, IBM, Lehman Brothers, Morgan Stanley, Norwich Union and Unilever. The degrees are supported by the Department for Education and Skills and the Higher Education Funding Council for England.

Provided they meet the criteria for interview, every ITMB graduate is guaranteed an interview with a member company of the e-skills UK’s employer Board.

"Provided they meet the criteria" - for MS this is very high!!!

"interview with a member company" - could be any of them.

Its not a lie you are guaranteed some kind of interview from what I've heard but it will almost certainly be a BO/MO role and as someone has said you have to meet MS criteria too.

On a positive note there are loads of employers who love the course and its UCL so you get massive exposure to top employers in most industries.

Why so? Is there no way I'd be able to get an FO interview?

    From the UCL IMB Brouchere:

Banking is also a popular choice of career. There are Information Management for Business graduates working in areas such as investment banking, fund management, venture capital, business analysis and broking.
This led me to believe that there was at least some opportunity but perhaps I was thinking to optimistically .

With a 2.1 from UCL and a strong application you will probably get an interview, however that doesn't mean you will get the job offer.

It's more about personality than your prior knowledge. These companies know that they can give you the knowledge required to do the job but they cannot change your personality. They hire people that will fit well into the corporate culture.

You can also get a FO role. I know one or two graduates working at BB's in S&T who are graduates from IMB at UCL as well as someone in IBD who came to give a talk a few weeks ago in one of our lectures. I was just pointing out that you are not guaranteed a FO interview
