Winchester or Bath Spa?

Alright, so I have now decided I do want to drop my Gloucestershire application and replace it with another one to do a course I'd be more interested in than journalism. However, I still want to get into Journalism, but you have pretty much confirmed what I sort of already knew: that I do not need the degree to get into the profession and that I might as well study something I'd enjoy more.

So now I will either pick Bath Spa for Cultural Studies and Media Communications

or

Winchester for American Studies.

I like the Winchester course outlines better, because I really want to study American Studies, but I know nothing about the location and I'm worried I might not like the area. I really want a uni in the south and I like how it's close to the sea and Southampton and all, but that's all I know...

I really like how Bath is so close to Bristol and Bath itself isn't as tiny as Winchester either. I would enjoy the course, but I wish they offered American Studies in Bath or Bristo, but they don't.

So any advice? Again, it has to be quick because my last opportunity to change a course will be tomorrow....

Basically, what's Winchester like? Does it have a nice athmosphere and decent shopping etc?

Does Bath's location win over a course I'd like a tad better?

Or can anyone suggest any good uni for American Studies in the south ???

Thanks so much

And sorry for being such a pain, but I appreciate your help
Instead of making new threads every ten minutes why don't you just add this to an existing thread that you already made?

Because I figured if anyone knew anything about Bath Spa or Winchester, they'd be more likely to see this thread, than to read all the way through the other one. So I'd possibly miss out on constructive comments :frown: I'm sorry about this. I promise it's the last choice-related thread I post
Winchester is a very small city, but it's absolutely gorgeous. You should do a search for it on Google image. There are quite a few pubs and bars, although not really a clubbing scene. Loads of places to eat out, parks, gardens, leisure centres, lots of places of historic interest. It's basically very, very pretty.

The shops aren't that great, but the transport links are. 20 minutes in the London direction takes you to Basingstoke, where there is a huge shopping centre, and 20 minutes south will take you to Southampton. You can also get regular and direct trains to London (1 hr), Reading (40 mins), Portsmouth, Bournemouth, Brighton, Poole, Weymouth and even trains right up to the north. Once every hour there are direct trains to Reading, Oxford, then up to Birmingham. Then half the trains go up west to Manchester, and the other half up east to Sheffield, Leeds, York, and some even go right up to Edinburgh or even Glasgow.

It's quite quiet for a university town, but attractive enough to make up for it, in my opinion.

Awww, thanks  Sounds really nice. I don't care too much about a great clubbing scene, I just hope I wouldn't get bored in such a tiny city and have trouble meeting people ... Altough I would still meet ppl on my course. And I bet my dog would love it there

Yeah, I did see some really pretty images of Winchester and I noticed how close it is to Southampton. You don't really go shopping every day anyway, so I guess that's close enough.

Is public transport expensive in the UK?

Reasonably expensive. I think a young person's return to Basingstoke (with railcard) is about £4. Single to Eastleigh (half way from Winchester to Southampton) is about £2/3.

Oh, that's okay then. I was worried I might end up stuck in a small town because I couldn't afford to get out lol. So what do you say: go for the course rather than the location ??
Yeah, I'd go for the course. You will meet people and have a good time no matter where you go.

If you're not planning on living in halls, I'd probably recommend Winchester, because it's so small you won't be far away from people, and if you want a big night out in Southampton or something you'll probably all have to get the train back together anyway.

I just realized that I have a friend who's at Winchester  lol I don't know him that well and I wasn't aware of where exactly he's from. But last night, I kept thinking how Winchester sounded familar so I had a look at my address book and it's where he's from  lol So now I think I am definitely going for that one because it cannot be bad if he chose to go there

Argh !!!!! I just called UCAS and I cannot change the unis I have already changed one :frown: I was gonna replace Gloucestershire with Winchester, but I have already changed the course at Gloucester once so I cannot change it again :frown: I have three unis I have not changed, they're Kingston, Roehampton and Canterbury. I really don't want to change Canterbury tho. So that means I could only change Kingston or Roehampton to Winchester :frown: Uuuuuuh !!! What am I supposed to do ??? I think - I THINK - that I would rather go to Winchester than either of them because I like the course better, but I don't know whether I prefer Kingston or Roehampton ??? Any advice? Really quickly, please ???

Forget it. I thought I'd give it a try and call UCAS again and - MIRACLE - the guy I got this time happily changed it  So it's all good  I forgot to change my Kingston course from journalism to media and cultural studies over all this, but I don't even care that much anymore. I don't think I have the guty to call UCAS a third time in one day lol

it is? the town itself (as opposed to campuses in the middle of nowhere) has always had a fairly student-orientated feel to it i've found. & reasonable night life. & the shops aren't that bad! but then it's not a huge city so depends what you're expecting i suppose..

spot on with the transport links though - they're very good.
