Simple is best I think, anything patterned/bright etc won't look good with the gown. I presume your gown is black? Mine was too and we had a red hood, a plain white shirt or smart top and black pencil skirt looked great and really smart

I wore a plain black shift dress under mine - along the lines of this. One girl had a red dress, but most wore black with the odd person in grey. Either smart dresses, or pencil skirts/suit trousers and blouses.

To be honest, if your gown is anything like mine, very little of what you wear will be visible anyway. Wear some gorgeous shoes, your feet are about the only part of you that won't be covered by the gown!

I wore this dress for my masters graduation a few days ago. Most girls wore quite formal/party dresses for it, guys mostly wore suits. Gown over that was black with full sleeves, with a green and blue hood.

The one thing I wasn't counting on when I picked that dress was the weather - it was -2C that day and my family insisted on taking pictures in the snow! *shiver*
