Why do you dislike Holland Hall so much??

Well, I actually went out for some drinks with a bunch of Holland people my flatmate knows. Thought my assumptions would be dashed to the ground. Nope, they really are antisocial, stuck-up, nouveau riche clones.

Of course, I'm not so small minded to think that they're all like that. But the exceptions I have met have mostly said that they wish they'd been in different halls.

can't coment on the catered food as im in lafrowda (enhanced) but as for sharing bath rooms I've never had to que for either the loo or shower (we have 3 of each between 12 of us) with the added bonus of never having to clean a loo or shower

i put exeter as my firm choice a couple of days ago and am 90% sure im going to apply for lafrowda..

how is it?? is it in a good location in terms of distance from everything on campus?
aside from not being able to afford heated towel rails and a double bed, i would have thought that you'd meet nicer, down to earth people in the cheaper halls...
is that actually the case do you think? and what are the chances of getting the accomidation you apply for? i'd hate to get stuck in a double catered room or something :|

I know this is a bit vague but what sort of people are at Exeter in terms of personality?

What's the atmosphere like and what's the student campus like in terms of nightlife and social stuff?

How far are the town clubs from Streatham campus? I went to an open day but didn't have a chance to see the town :frown:

Just to let you know, apparently the prices for Lafrowda are going up by quite a lot for next year. It should still be the cheapest accommodation, but Exeter is very expensive to live in.
Lafrowda is in a quite good location, 5 mins from campus and about 10-15 from town, but there is a lot of building work going on in that area at the moment, they are even moving some people out it's been so bad.
I personally don't think there's that much difference between people in Lafrowda and those in other halls. From my friends (and I know people in quite a few halls) I would say that people in Lafrowda become very close and spend A LOT of time and money going out together - meaning that they don't seem to save any more money than I do in more expensive halls.
In terms of application, make sure you apply for all self-catered to make sure that if you don't get one of your choices that they will at least try and put you in something similar.

i'm a first year at exeter as well :smile:

i've met fantastic people during my time here, loads of amazing, completely different people! you can't say that exeter is rah or posh or whatever because it certainly isn't. people tend to have some money, but that doesn't mean they're idiots! i've met people from different halls and they're all very nice, even the ones from holland.. surely you might meet people you don't like, but hey that's life. we have loads of international students as well which is nice, all in all you meet all sorts of people and in general everyone is very nice, friendly and open. and if it happens that you don't like someone, don't hang out with them. simple.

streatham is a brilliant campus, you have loads of going every night, you won't get bored! societies organise socials and stuff and the nightclubs in town have theme nights every week, it's pretty amazing even if we only have about 3-4 nightclubs. there's plenty to do in exeter: gigs, movies, social events...

the campus is about 15-20 minutes walk from town, depends on how fast you are walking. you can easily walk to the nightclubs if you want to.. if you take a taxi it costs around 4-5 pounds so if you share it comes down to about a pound/person which is awesome.

Well the people vary. It just depends who you meet and who is going. So I don't think I can help much with that question.
There's always something going on Streatham - I don't live on streatham so I don't attend as many as I can but i knnow that there's always something on. The nightlife in comparison to bigger cities isn't great and coming from central London I do find myself complaining at the music - so dodgy songs do get played. But I think nights out in exeter really depend on who you are go out with. When people are drunk they don't care about the sometimes depressing nights out but I am teetotal so I am very much AWARE of everything. :biggrin:

The clubs in town are about 20 minutes away but it depends where you live in campus and which club you are going to. You can always get a taxi and split it in between the group. All the clubs can be found just off the highstreet too so they are all pretty accessible.

I am going to be totally honest with - Exeter nightlife isn't the greatest but I've had some good nights out and may I remind you that they don't not necessarily have to be in a club the various bars where you can have a good night with the right company of friends. Perhaps it's just me coming from London - I have high expectations plus I'm really into the music and if the music is bad then that destroys my night. Exeter isn't a bad place to go out expecially if you a from a small town - it really just depends on the type of friends you make and the type of person you are - if you know how to have a good time then you'll be fine! The best club I would say is Arena they do student nights on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Monday usually has a theme, Tuesday is a cheesey night and Thursday is just an ordinary club night for students; a lot of the older students (2nd & 3rd years) tend to go then.

It truly is the greatest hall, a fantastic blend of tradition (we have our own Gentleman's club etc), modern facilities (think Sky TV and pool table in the common room) and an awesome community spirit! We're catered, and take our meals with Holland. Don't let this put you off though, the food's great and the people are too! We also enjoy a cracking aspect, sitting on the top of a large hill which gives us a lovely view of the river and rolling hills beyond, brilliant.

Yes fantastic, good to hear! It's very nice dining with Holland, the food is always decent and the people are incredibly friendly (seriously, don't believe the hype...), the views are insanely nice as well. The bar isn't always open, and to be honest it doesn't matter because we Mardonites tend to socialise in our common room (there's pool and a table tennis table), but we do use it occasionally for champagne receptions etc for our formal dinners. There is a pool table in the Holland Bar I think, but you have to pay, but they always have a selection of the day's papers which is a nice touch. Glad to hear you're considering it! Been looking at the accommodation website and have narrowed my choices down to:

Mardon
Lopes
Hope
Pensylvaia (maybe)

Can you tell me how many people live in each of those accommodation options? I can't seem to find it on the website!

Are there any traditions / activitis that massively make any of them stand out from the bunch?
