The monarchy is actually a massive draw for tourists. My sister-in-law is Chinese and when her family visited they knew far more about the royal family than we did.

I'm not saying they are the only reason tourists come here, but they play a big part in projecting an image about the UK which is very positive for tourism.

Please, the tourism argument is stupid. As is the argument that we are some how paying for the monarchy to live a luxury lifestyle. You guys portray it as though the queen gets a nice big lump sum which she then goes and blows on a few diamond necklaces or something :facepalm2:

    They're rich. Get over it.

Just a bit of semantics, but it should really be referendum on the monarchy. 'Against' is a bit presumptive.

Being a republic won't be much different. You'll just pay millions to a president who does sod all, and is probably some slimy career politician.

I'm a lefty liberal, and I will always back the Monarchy. The Queen is a credit to the country, to the British people and to the throne.

I'm not too sure a monarchy composes a huge role in 'lefty' ideology.
