Does anyone know if Australia or France have any special ceremonies for when they bring home their war dead? similar to the town of Wooten Basset in the UK where a vigil ha become customary as the bodies are brought through.

I don't think so. The ceremony in Wootton Bassett is pretty spontaneous.

In France the flame of the Unknown Soldier under the Arc of Triumph is used as a symbol for all returning corpses. There's an annual ceremony but other than that not much.

Yep, they have Anzac Day in Australia. I don't know if this is what you mean but it is like our remembrance day.
