    Heyz,

So I try to do 3 sets of 8 reps for incline bench press every week. Normally i use 24 kg dumbbells or 52.5 kg barbell to do them. However, this week I thought I'll try out the Smith machine. Somehow even doing 40kg (plate weight) was a huge struggle for me and I couldn't finish my reps. At the same time, my training partner who usually does bout5-8 kilos less than me could do 45kg easy. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on why this happen; what my weakness is and how I can improve it.

    Thanks

So you do more on a free weight bar - why do you care who presses most on a machine?

A guy I train with can Smith press more than me, but I out bench, overhead (axle, log, bar, strange object) so I don't really care. if they add "Smith Machine Press" to a competiton then I'll start to worry about it

Tbh you probably will find on the day you had done more with your arms or over the past few days you hadn't been eating as much or you were tired or could be many contributing factors, just make sure you keep hydrated and keep those sugars up and your weight lifting should be a constant with all machines :P

It's not bout him being able to do more; but why he can do more as I am generally stronger hence I wanted to know if it's my technique or it focuses on different muscles etc.
