Hi guys, you may have known that I have been trying to get some large animal vet work experience for a while now. Apologises for the essay to come:

Well i've sent a batch of letters out to such vets that are about an hour away from my home so i intended to stay in other accomodation. Yesterday I got a response so I was really happy at first. I'm obviously very greatful for it but I would have hoped i'd get a response of one of the others beforehand.

They sent me an email offering me a place but then I sent an email back saying 'Would you mind me asking if I will specifically get just large animal work experience for that week (which is what I'm ideally looking for)? Is there any chance you could give me a rough outline of what would be involved and what you could provide me?' because I knew this vet centre was the 'least specialised in large animal'

They responded and said 'I’ve put the dates on the calander so consider that booked. We are mainly small animal but we do large animal still on a daily basis. There are routine calls each morning-TB testing etc so you can go out to those.During the day there may be emergency farm calls-caesareans.We can make sure you go out as much as possible. However it won’t harm you to see some of the small animal too in between. When you come I will check what calls come in and make sure the vets remember to take you out!'

The first email they sent me they recommended a B&B next door to them in response for me saying i will stay in a travelodge. But am I looking too much into this or do they seem a bit pushy to you? Because now I'm worried because it's like they have definately booked it when I would have prefered to have waited and seen if I got a response from a more 'specific' LA vets (one that didn't specialise in smaller animal' I havent got money to throw away - it will cost me £120 to stay in accomodation there and I'm basically just worried I'm not really going to see the full LA experience. i wanted to spend the price so I could get to see a lot. I have a mixed practice like 5 mins from where I live and the impression i'm getting from them is that they are similar because they do on calls too.

Now you'l probably be thinking why did i send a letter to them in the first place but the vets had been recommended to me from my mixed practice as being LA and i was hoping to spend my 8hours a day seeing that side. Is this normal anyway -that I won't be able to see full on LA?

Does anyone see my point? What do I say because i don't want to reject them, i just want to see if i get anymore responses from specifically LA vets and I want to spend my money and time wisely. I just feel a bit panicy now because they think im coming. I should send them an email back asap but what do i do and how should I say what i have said in this post to them because the last vets that i sent a letter too, took it the wrong way and they felt that i thought they weren't good enough which really wasn't the case. I rang them up and they were so rude to me but i'm really not that type of person. I don't want to mess anyone around

Apologises for the grammer/bad spelling, too much to write!

this always happens with work experience. When i was applying i got two offers for exactly the same week and was kinda in the same position. How far away is the work experience? Like if you did have to cancel would it be really short notice, or could you give them some time. Tbh, they probably wont care if you cancel or not, because it won't really make any difference to them, but it might stop someone else getting the opportunity. Anyway, in that situation i think i would accept the work experience, but dont book your accommodation just yet. It seems like they will try and allow you to see as much LA as possible, but i understand that at this stage you need to focus on what you can stick on your work experience list, its a shame but thats how it works.

So it seems like you will see some LA work, and if theyre going out everyday it seems pretty good. So yeh, i would accept it, and cancel with as much notice as possible if you have to, but you could always do this one and another purely LA one if it comes through, giving you an extra two weeks work experience.

Some vets act like they're doing you such a massive favour by accepting you that if you ask one single question its like "how dare you, isnt it enough that i accepted you? you should be greateful as it is!" and while they are doing you a favour i think as students we need to know what we'll get out of it too.

Anyway, hope this helps, i should probably get back to my anatomy :-(

Well its for the week beginning 22 August 2011! So very far away but i guess i worded it a bit far in the email, perhaps i came across too keen and the way she said it just sounded like ill definitely be coming then like she was sure to book it. To be honest all I'm worried about is the cost im going to have to spend to stop over. I don't really have another week spare to do this LA vet experience. And I was kinda hoping I wouldn't see anything else but LA. but i guess i accidently got across to them that I hadn't seen much SA, i have seen loads on past w/e. So i don't want to spend £120 and see the LA on call stuff which I could see at my local mixed practice and see all the SA stuff I've seen there too. I know i did send them the letter, i accept that. I was jsut so desperate and perhaps i just didn't get across to them first about what they could offer me if you get what i mean. I would rather spend £120 and go to literally a LA hospital/vets where they treat the LA there, rather than go on call which i can see anywhere because i think thats what it means by w/e at a large animal vets. I have sent letters of to them sorts of vets. Perhaps I should give them a call asap to see if they do offer them. I jsut think it looks better now, that if i do not accept the offer and let them know now, it does look better than ignoring them for 2 months then sending an email saying that. Its just what do I say? I really don't want to come across like I apparently did before.

just accept the offer, email saying thankyou, and cancel if a better one comes up, and if you dont want to do it at all then just decline the offer now

Is there no way you could travel there each day? The nearest mixed vets near me that did work exp was about 45 mins drive, but there was a bus so I went home on that (although that took 2 1/2 hours!) - far cheaper than staying over!

I'd do as tigercallie says, and maybe try contacting a few further afield if you really want a LA-specific vet and don't mind staying over

i went to a mixed practice with the aim of doing large animal experience and I loved it!! I'd say go for it, its bound to be a valuable experience even if you dont get to see much LA stuff, the more vet practices you go to the better idea you'll have about the job and what you'd like do
Definately look into transport there and back, for my lambing i drove nearly an hour each way and spent loads on petrol but it was cheaper than staying nearby.
Best plan would be to phone the other vet practices you mentioned so you can get an immediate response

On Monday I will phone all the other vet practices I sent a letter to.

Thanks for your replies. Of course it will be a valuable experience. Its jsut i just have that week really to do some w/e at a large animal vet and this is more mixed. I'd like it if I just had a week based on LA. But i will phone around.

If not I will look into other ways of travel. So is there any point letting her know now how i feel? Like asking her if i can have a bit more time or would she mind if i was to cancel, doing it a week after she booked it for me? x
