I was going through the safety pages for my FB-account today, and I looked at the section about my Account and its usage. There is a place under settings where you can look at your account activity and it says when you logged in and next to it is says where. Some of the locations are accurate but a couple is not. It says "approximately" next to it, but it is not a city close to mine, it is another area of France. It says they made the assumption based on my IP number. Have any of you checked this on your own account and what is your experience with it?

It'll most likely be where you've logged in on your computer. Because in the majority of cases, you internet service provider won't be located near you (it'll be directed to your house from, possibly, miles away), it'll pick up your IP address and recognise it from wherever your ISP is based. Nothing to worry about

IP addresses are allocated in blocks to ISPs, who in turn allocate them according to their own numbering scheme. These seemingly random 32bit numbers are actually highly organised to help make networks more efficient. It's therefore possible to relatively accurately determine someone's rough geographical location by their IP address, as the IP address will often resolve to an ISP's server/network node whose geographical location is known, and logic suggests that you're going to be usually near this node in order to connect.
