The reason the government cannot afford to give everyone grants for higher education anymore is because New Labour decided university is for everybody, to the point the government cannot afford to give all students grants because there are too many of us. The result of the socialist left's policy is university is now no longer for the intelligent, but for the well off. University is paid for with the sweat of the brow. If everybody goes to university there will not be enough people paying taxes to fund it. They want a free ride, and they want other people to pay for them.

The socialist left have made English education a capitalist commodity, and with their rioting they are forcing the hand of the government to take a more authoritarian line, resembling fascism. They truly are the blight of the nation.

New Labour couldn't be described by anybody who knows anything about politics as "socialist".
Blair was a child of Thatcher.

I have to agree with the O/P - there are many graduates who are barely literate and degree courses that are just funny. Just google Golf Studies! LOL

Except for the fact that Scandinavian countries often have free universities and a greater percentage of the population going to university...

Having said that, I think many people who go to university are going for the wrong reasons. They have been encouraged to go by gov't policies and their school when an apprenticeship etc. would suit them better!

Shame that Scandinavian countries are not really socialist. Its a fairly common misconception

Yes it is. They tax the rich and the middle-class, and use the money to provide decent public services and education for the poor. Whats not socialist about that?

Because socialism is far more than that. And the whole point of socialism at least according to Marx was that it would be a transition between capitalism and communism.

The Scandinavian countries also have every high levels of business freedom and property rights both of which would be missing in a socialist state.

I never said or thought they were. I have no idea what label they are of - just everything they do seems to work well.

OP thinks that more students going to uni = must increase fees. Scandinavian countries have more students going to uni and 0 fees.

'From each according to his ability, to each according to his need'.

The state taking away money from the rich and giving it to the poor seems socialist to me. It may not be quite what Marx had it mind, but it is certainly his legacy.

Socialism and Communism and Marxism and Capitalism and all other systems mentioned are useless relicts of the past.

I vote for a brand new system based on logic, reason and resource.

Same can't be said for the 'boy' Milliband, the union stooge! The reason the government's finances are in such a mess is that they allowed a financial service industry to operate in international markets without sufficient regulation as they were too busy enjoying the boom years of inflated asset prices. Everyone got in on the act, even dull boring old building societies. Toxic debt is still on the banks books, it hasn't gone away, also the banks hold a lot of Soverign Debt of countries whose economies are bankrupt and the city boys are still selling the derivatives such as CDS, CDO etc that caused the problem in first place and earning enormous big fat bonuses. Happy Days!!!:lolz:
