i doubt it was quite like that, i've had situations with girls where i've felt they're getting a bit too bossy and said that i dont have to do exactly what they tell me.

means he doesnt have to do what you tell him, and he doesnt have to ask your permission before he does stuff.
To me it sounds like he's trying to tell you to stop being bossy/possesive. It's good to know that we're not the only ones who have no clue about what the opposite sex is saying. Such as why say "Please yourself" or "If you want to" when you completley disagree and then wont speak for a week?

IMO it basically means that he is pissed off with having to answer to you (as in you seem like his mum). The way I put it sounds harsh but that is the only way I could explain it and he probably didn't mean it in quite that harsh a way, but you get the idea.
