    All passwords should be treated as compromised. There're already some 300K in plaintext, as they didn't think to salt.

    Seems a dump of the database was obtained. The passwords were apparently encrypted but because people persist with pathetic passwords and gawker didn't use a salt, brute forcing them was relatively easy (http://www.itpro.co.uk/629401/gawker...in-server-hack)

    Edit: it also seems gawker were using DES to encrypt the passwords. The main issue with this being it truncates passwords to 8 characters.
