If the course is in September 2011, and you'll find out in March if you've been accepted - should you have approached the bank as early as possible? Is there a general rule of thumb about this? I have never gotten a loan, of any kind, before.

If it is a career development loan off Barclays or the Coop (the only banks that offer them) the sooner the better,. Their inefficiency makes SFE look positively wonderful!

You should approach the bank two months before the commencement of the course,so that time the college starts your loan amount would be directly sent to the the respective college.

Only 2 months notice is enough? If true, that's fantastic!

the only 2 true career development loans are
    Barclays
    http://www.barclays.co.uk/Loans/Ourl...P1242557963934
    and
    Co-op
    http://www.co-operativebank.co.uk/se...ns?WT.svl=nav3

other banks will have a similarly named product but they won't be interest free for 12 months.
