Hi guys, i'm on a gap year after not making the Alevel grades to get into my firm and insurance choice this year and i want to apply for uni 2011 however lately i have been thinking about maybe applying to a uni in America. And i was wondering if anyone could tell me how exactly does one go about doing this? And also will it be expensive?

I would be very grateful if people could give me some light on how the process is and what is included in the process.

    Thanks

I can't tell you much about the process but I read an article recently about just this... the points I remember were that if you are not a US citizen, the whole Visa thing can be tricky, you can't get a student loan so you'd have to pay upfront - the guy in the article was paying I think £12,000 a year but it could be twice that depending on what you're studying. I'm afraid I can't remember whether that included living expenses or not but I remember working out that overall, it cost pretty much the same as the UK except without the benefit of a loan.

first of all, have you taken the SAT/SAT II? and how highly ranked a university would you like to go to? if you tell me that, i can give you more detail.

if you want to apply for next year, you'll have to hurry! deadlines for most higher ranked unis (or "colleges," in American) are at end of December/beginning of January.
you need to make an account on commonapp.org (it's kind of like ucas), add the colleges you want to apply to, obtain 3 references (one from your counselor and two from teachers), and fill out essays. a lot of colleges have supplement forms which require you to write more than one essay per college.

as for costs, i'm eyeballing approximately 30,000-40,000 dollars per year, so about 20,000-25,000 pounds. still, america has loads of scholarship opportunities, though you do have to look for them (you can check out the website "fastweb scholarships," for starters)
