    Could someone tell me how best to go about integrating 1/((x+1)((X^2)-1)) wrt x please? I have tried using partial fractions (a/(x+1) + b/(x+1)^2 + c/(x-1)) but the simultaneous equations produced were inconsistent.

    Thanks!

    multiply the whole thing through by (x+1)^2 (x-1) and you get

    1 = a(x+1)(x-1) + b(x-1) + c(x+1)^2

    Now set x=1 and you get c,
    x=-1 and you get b,
    and finally x=0 and use the results for b and c that you just worked out and you should get a.

    They shouldn't be inconsistent; what simultaneous equations did you get? Show us your working and we'll try and show you where you've gone wrong.
