I'd have thought that with the physical demands of the job a lot of people would retired fairly early, or move into administrative jobs rather than fighting fires into their 50s and 60s? Obviously budget cuts play a part in the recruitment/retention issues but none of my local stations have advertised a job within the last 4 years.
Of course I'm not against older firefighters, I was just wondering ...
Also, a lot of services are becoming 'retained services' where members of the public volunteer and get paid only when they're called out to fires.
