Well that's it really I'm looking out for some recommendations for games of the following types:

    - Looking for an RTS with large scale conflict, I've played the total war series games to death and love them as well as the other more likely suspects in the RTS genre like WC3, SC etc.but I'm looking for a more modern/sci-fi take on large scale conflict in an RTS.

    - City building/tycoon games, again played the usual suspects, Tropico series, Civ series, Simcity, Anno 1701 and 1404 etc. and was wondering are there any hidden gems I'm missing out on in this genre?

    Chess.
That failed when philistine used it and it fails even more now as it's not even your joke to begin with, not to mention it's also wrong as chess is turn based....

You should check out dawn of war. Youtube a few video's. It's a futuristic RTS with up to 9 playable races with their own unique units, based on the warhammer series. If you're not into warhammer, don't let it put you off! I'm not into it but the game is fantastic, the multiplayer is amasing and the campaign is cool.

If opting for something more realistic, try company of heroes. Again, youtube a few vids. its a rts based on world war 2, using units and tactics that real generals used back then. Has a unique cover system that makes it a cut above many RTS's

Home World 2 is a decent space based RTS.
