    It's from this novel by Douglas Adams called 'Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy' Basically, in the book the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything is calculated by this enormous supercomputer over a period of 7.5 million years to be 42. There are other references to this too but this is where I know it from
