In September 2010, I graduated with a 2:1 degree in Music. I have since then decided i would like to become a Primary School Teacher. However, I cannot afford to do the PGCE even with the Bursary as I have my own house and rent etc proves expensive.
I am aware how difficult the GTP course is to get onto. I have lots of experience in a secondary school but limited experience in a Primary School setting. Just wondering what advice as to my next steps should be?
I am currently thinking about trying to apply for a job as a TA in a Primary School.

You would definitely need to get some experience within a primary school, but bear in mind that working as a TA in a primary school would pay you approx the same money you would get from the PGCE (approx £600/£700ish a month).

On my PGCE I get the bursary of £4k (split over 10payments of £400 per month). You will also be eligible for a loan of £3.5k minimum, and depending on age/your income/partners income/parents income up to £3k grant, plus extra from your uni. I actually get nearly £13k in grants and loans this year, which I'm sure is more than you'd earn as a TA. That said being a TA is better pay than you'd get for voluntary work experience, which is the other way you can get the necessary experience!
