In my personal statement I speak out the emergence of former soviet countries 'in the 21st century'

Should this be spelt 'twenty-first' or is the '21st' acceptable?

Usually numbers 1-9 are wrote out and anything above that is just expressed as a number. So I would go for ‘21st’.

I think 21st is ok if you need to save space, but if you're not worried about using up space you would loose nothing by writing it out.

21st is fine, they won't really reject you for it. Unless you have characters to spare, then I'd go with 21st.

Considering you only have a limited number of characters that you can use in your personal statement I would recommend just using numbers. Plus, that is the normal way to write it anyway.

You see it as 21th century everywhere plus the general rule" 1-9" written and "9+" expressed as numbers so I'd say go with the numbers option
