I know what you mean. I use the tube a lot, mainly around central London because I'm unsure of the directions, in some areas like Leicester Square it's like a maze, plus I'm really lazy 
Having an oyster makes it worse as well, it's much cheaper than a travelcard so you end up taking a lot of unnecessary journeys.
