Navel piercing infection

I got my navel pierced about five months ago, and up until a few weeks ago it was fine. But it's suddenly started getting all pussy underneath and bleeding a bit and it hurts when I touch it. I keep picking at the scabby bit and touching it though which has probably made it worse so I'm going to stop doing that! I'm scared I've got an infection :frown:. Any ideas what I can do?

Clean it with salt water solution a couple of times a day and see if that helps. And yeah stop picking at it cause it will make it worse.
Hope it goes okay!

The only thing I would add is warm the salt water slightly before using it.

And see your piercer or doctor if it gets worse.

How do I make a salt water solution, and what do I do with it? (lol sorry if that's a stupid question but when I got it done I was given a cleaning solution so I havent done salt soaks before)

Salt + Water = salt water solution
Just use it to clean your piercing

Boil some water, and use that to scald out a container. Boil some more water, and add salt to it at a concentration of one teaspoon salt to one pint of water. Note this is not very strong!

Then you'll need something like an egg cup or a shot glass. Put some warm soution in it, kinda bend forwards slightly and put it on your piercing. Then swish it around and ideally leave it on for 5-10 mins. Dry it with cotton buds or soemthing. Repeat about 3 times a day as necessary.

sudocreme! dip the stud in the creme and replace in naval, this will get the creme in the area and will heal nicely, i had that problem with one of my ear piercings.

No. That might work for ears, but would be stupid on navels. Warm salt water is the way to go.
ok it sounds really bad....like u def have an infection!!!
when i had mine done the same thing happened.
this is how i got rid of it...this might seems pretty extreme but it worked!! i doubt salt water really works too well on an infection like this...
firstly dont take the bar out cos putting it back in will be excrutiating. after washing liberally with plenty of salt water and a clean tissue i would lie on my back(so that the liquid didnt totally spill everywhere) and pour strongish diluted dettol (the instructions are on the bottle) into my belly button and all over the piercing and make sure it really went in and out of the 'wound' fully by moving the bar up and down gently. then pat it dry and leave it to the air until it's dry. instead of dettol i would sometimes use surgical spirit.
juno's advice about the shot glass sounds like quite a good idea for it too...
this needs to be done at least twice a day if not 3 times. you might find it helps to cover it up during the day with a dressing so that nothing can rub on it, catch it (pain!!!) and so that it really can't get dirty, but it's probably better to leave it to the air at night.
hopefully you dont need to do this for more than a week.
when it's calmed down a bit you really need to be using that savlon spray( the clear one in the blue bottle) or salt water once or twice a day until you are sure the thing has healed properly all the way through.
and picking it/playing with it really will not help. but i think you knew that....

And that is the best thing to do if you want to make your piercing worse and end up having to take it out.

Don't use Surgical Spirit, and certainly do not use Dettol!
well it made my infection go away really fast!!!

don't use dettol or surgical spirit.
when making saline solution you should only ever use rock salt, and you SHOULD use a stronger solution than 1 teaspoon to 1 pint of water. if it stings it'll only be for a few seconds and it shows that it is working.
savlon spray is really good too.
make sure your bar is a titanium one or one suited for unhealed piercings as other materials will only exaggerate your discomfort and may even worsen the problem.
i agree with mademoiselle84's advice on covering the piercing with a dressing during the day and letting it breathe at night time.
if it doesn't clear up in the next few days or show signs of improvement then go to the doctor
Don't go to your doctor before you've been to see a piercer, in these cases they seem to know best. The piercer in Blue Banana in town is really nice Sam, I'm sure he'd have a look at it for you if you went in.

Salt solutions should be no stronger than tears (which I know isn't very useful). The saline preps they sell in chemists that you could also use (although it'll be much more expensive) are 0.9%, which is 0.9g of salt in 100ml of water ... so yeah, not very strong.

Oh and what colour is the puss?

I had brown pus once! I think it was really yellow and mixed with blood, but it was icky.
Aww icky! I've only had white lymph discharge so far and fingers crossed that's all I'm gonna get!

This is EXACTLY why i refuse to have it done. To all those people who have it done, what exactly do you expect to look like when you're 80? :thumpdown

I'll have a small white scar just above my navel, alongside all the lovely wrinkles, thread veins, stretch marks and god knows what else I'm likely to pick up over the years. A little white scar will be nothing. It's not like I'll be having my stomach on show when I'm that old anyways.
ahh brings back memories - in a weird way lol. Ive never had mine done, but in year 9 most girls went through a phase of having theres peirced at this crappy back street peircing place called 'Tonys' . And everyone got an infection after having theres done, most people went to their GP about it and got this creme which i think was called Salvon or Salivon - and it worked for everyone and cleared it up really well.
