I havent got this girls number but I really want to ask her out on a date, we can hold a decent conversation and stuff. But, as its christmas holidays, is asking online a yay or nay thing to do?

I thought no, but my friend (who has a current gf) said I should.

    Opinions please

Depends. If you feel comfortable with it, sure, why not. If you don't, then don't.

The only person qualified to give an answer is someone who knows more about the situation.

    That'd be you, then.

Ask her what's she's doing for new years. If she replies "nothing", there's your chance. If she's doing something, hope to god she invites you along, if it's a get together party with friends. If it's a family thing, I'd avoid it.

Just ask if she wants to meet up at some time (don't call it a "date") then you can ask her if she'd like to go out again (you can call it a "date" this time) in person?
