My friend who is in 6th form works at Co-Op. She's recently been told that in the New Year because loads of students who work there are too busy with exams, coursework etc, to take on overtime, they're going to be firing a lot of them.

I remember being told once that it is unlawful for an employer to sack somebody if their education is disallowing them from taking on more hours or something like that. Is this actually the case?

Surely it depends whether their contract states they are expected to take on a certain amount of overtime?
