Dw, you can go to a uni where you'll have fun now.

I can only offer advice based on the following scenarios:

Case 1: Rejected from Imperial
- Before you exclaim "hell no that will never happen!", I can assure you it may, despite your excellent results.

- So that being said, I suggest you might as well reapply since you have nothing to lose. You are still in the army and you are not going to start university in 2011 anyway. Besides, reapplicants stand a marginally (and I emphasize, only marginally or perhaps insignificantly) higher chance, simply because they are more aware of the application procedures, know what to look out for and will be more prepared for the admission test / interview.

Case 2: Accepted by Imperial
- This will be very tricky. It involves risking your Imperial offer, and in the event you get rejected by both Imperial and Oxford next year (competition gets stiffer by the year, though the expected outcome seems to be the reverse for me), are you okay with going with your third choice? Are you willing to risk your Imperial offer? If you answer yes to both questions, reapply. No questions asked.

- If you view Imperial to be on par or better than Oxford and you are not willing to risk it, then I suggest you accept Imperial (provided your family can support you, given the additional fees and costs in London).

Anyway, the fees are not fixed every year (meaning your first year fees will be different frrom your second year), so it does not really matter to us internationals when we apply since they are always on the rise.

Commiserations on the rejection though. Do take it as a learning point.

Did your army also actively try to sabotage your application process (I was informed three days before the interview that I was finally allowed to fly to the UK)?

Even your last choice University (Manchester) is amazing, as it ranks in the top 30 in the world regularly. And you've already got an offer from UCL, which tables say is the 4th best UK University in the world, and arguably 3rd, because Imperial doesn't offer arts subjects. UCL usually ranks in the top 10/20 in the world minimum. If what you care about is brand names, I don't see why your crying.

I hasten to notice that you haven't got an offer yet.
Should you not wait to see if you get one?
I got rejected from shed loads of places last year, including Oxford, and was just left with Oxford Brookes. So I reapplied. But in the case of Imperial I think it's a much better uni, if you do get a place go, as you don't want to take the risk of higher prices and no places. .
I understand it costs more but next year everything will rocket even more and you may not get a place anywhere. .

But Imperial seems to be practicing more at the edge of physics, offering programmes such as 'MSci Physics with Theoretical Physics' with the fourth year including a wide range of more advanced theoretical and mathematical options, some of which are shared with the highly specialised and renowned MSc in Quantum Fields and Fundamental Forces. Looks like you have already somewhat made up your mind, which saves me my explanation, though I will not reapply if I were in your situation and I have an offer from Imperial.

But be mentally prepared that Imperial and Oxford may reject you next year though Imperial gave you an offer this year.

My cousin was rejected as well. She was such an ideal candidate I was sure she would get in. The fact she got rejected actually helped put things into perspective. But if you aim low, you will never be disappointed :3

You can apply if you want to go to Oxford so bad (there was a girl from my school who applied to Cambridge three times before getting an unconditional), but with an offer from ICL, I would say take that instead. It's an amazing university, with a world-class reputation, with a "brand name" that matches Oxford in the science world.

Also it's worth noting that 75% of Oxford students are of British decent; though whether that's truly discriminative is largely unknown. I'm studying at Christ Church at the moment and the majority of students are British.

I have an absolutely crazy idea why the majority of people at Oxford (and, mostly likely any british university) are of British decent. it's so mental it might blow your mind, but i think just maybe, it could have a little bit to do with it being in Britain. :rolleyes:
