What can I do, what books can I read, what events can I attend to set me apart from all other applicants for IR.

Basically, what are top universities looking for in their IR graduates.

Hi! No-ones replied, so I thought I would

Books. Look on the universities' websites for the IR reading lists, one of the Oxbridge colleges does a pretty substantial one for Politics and LSE lists the key texts first years look at. Pick one or two off that list, read them (don't lie, because if they call you for interview, you are screwed), list some key points and how they relate to current affairs.

Events. Are you part of G&T? If so, go on the website and maybe attend some masterclasses or summer schools they are running.

ECs. Debate society? Join one or set one up. And just basically keep up with the news and note down anything important you could mention in your PS.

But don't put too much empahasis on extra-curriculars, try to keep your PS 2/3 academic and 1/3 extra-curricular - universities want to know that you are going there to learn, not to use their lacrosse field.
