ANTI-terror police foiled suspected Al Qaeda plots to slaughter Christmas shoppers in a bomb blitz and Mumbai-style massacres yesterday.

Officers arrested 12 young Muslim men in dawn raids in Cardiff, London, Birmingham and Stoke-on-Trent.

The suspects, all believed to be of Bangladeshi origin, were being questioned about alleged conspiracies to launch a spate of devastating attacks across the UK.

Police and MI5 officers, aided by the Government’s listening post GCHQ, are believed to have uncovered plans to set off a series of explosions in crowded high streets and shopping centres. Bars, night- clubs and restaurants are also thought to be potential targets.

WIN A LUXURY CRUISE TRIP FOR TWO WORTH £2,500!

It is also believed there is some intelligence of a suspected plot to launch commando raids like the Mumbai massacre in India two years ago which claimed more than 170 lives.

It was not clear exactly when the men arrested yesterday allegedly planned to carry out the attacks.

But Assistant Commissioner John Yates, national co-ordinator for counter-terrorism, said: “I believe it was necessary at this time to take action in order to ensure public safety.”

He described the operation as “absolutely necessary” and urged the public to remain vigilant.

The suspects – five from Cardiff, four from Stoke-on-Trent and three from London – were detained on suspicion of the “commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism” in the UK.

The men, aged between 17 and 28, were detained by unarmed officers at approximately 5am yesterday.

Police are carrying out detailed searches but it is not thought that any guns or explosives were seized.

It is believed computer equipment and mobile phones as well as cars and other materials were taken away.

Some of the suspects were born in Britain of Bangladesh parents and the others are here legitimately, said sources.

Mr Yates said: “This is a large-scale, pre-planned and intelligence-led operation involv-ing several forces. The operation is in its early stages so we are unable to go into detail about the suspected offences.”

The operation, which has been running for months, is being led by Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Osborne and is being coordinated from the West Midlands Counter-Terrorism Unit.

It also involves the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command, South Wales Police and Staffordshire Police.

West Midlands Police said in a statement: “All were arrested at or near their home addresses, with the exception of one suspect from Stoke who was at a domestic property in Birmingham. Searches are now being conducted at the home addresses, plus the address in Birmingham and another residence in London.

“The suspects will be held at police stations in central London, the North-west and the West Midlands.”

Yesterday’s operation comes after intelligence agencies in Britain, Pakistan and the USA intercepted a credible Al Qaeda plot to copy the carnage of Mumbai in November 2008.

Planned attacks in British, French and German cities were foiled by an international coalition of police and intelligence agencies in September.

The operation led Home Secretary Theresa May to back a warning by the US for its citizens to be vigilant when visiting Europe.

Police were quick to stress that yesterday’s arrests were not linked to the failed suicide bombing by a British-based man in Stockholm on December 11. But some experts believe the explosions planned by Taimour al-Abdaly were to be the start of a series of pre-Christmas attacks.

The father of three from Luton, Beds, was killed when one of three devices he was carrying detonated prematurely.

Yesterday, police searches in Stoke-on-Trent focused on three terraced houses, including two neighbouring properties in the Cobridge area. A number of police officers and forensic specialists could be seen in the residential street.

Police said four men, one aged 19, two aged 26 and one aged 25, were being questioned. One was arrested at a friend’s house in Birmingham.

Chief Superintendent Bernie O’Reilly, of Staffordshire Police, said in a letter to residents: “The arrests have come as part of a large-scale investigation. Public safety has been our overwhelming priority. That is why we moved quickly and why significant numbers of officers have been involved.”

In Cardiff, police arrested three men at their homes in the Riverside area and two at their homes in the Ely area. They were aged between 23 and 28.

The suspects were held at a large Victorian house in the residential area of Riverside.

In London, police arrested three men aged between 17 and 28 at their homes in the centre of the capital. A fourth home was also being searched.

The arrests were the most high-profile raids in Britain since April 2009, when 12 men were detained in raids across northern England. All were released without charge but authorities insisted they had thwarted an Al Qaeda bomb plot based in Manchester.

This terrifies me as I live across the road from the St Davids shopping centre and both me and my girlfriend walk through there every day aswell as her working there.

I fully expect to be labelled a racist for my views but here me out. I don't think immigration at the levels it has been is a good thing. I think the world is over populated aswell as the UK, I don't like the fact that the UK imports much of it's food and although it works perfectly for now I do wonder what if suddenly crops fail in some of the countries we import food from, how likely are they to export food to us if they can't feed their own people? Although I don't necessarily think this is going to happen I do think it is a possibility. Anyway my main argument against immigration is overpopulation and our unsustainable way of life.

Now many people falsely accuse me of being a racist because of my views above and it is further compounded by the fact that I despise Islam (even though Islam isn't a race). I am disgusted by sharia law, stonings, views on homosexuality the treatment of women and the threat of terrorism etc.

Now these potential Mumbai style attacks in my opinion should be one of the main news headlines across the country yet it isn't even on the front page of the independent or guardian websites. We the average white person in the UK are so terrified of being labeled racist that many of us are completely blind to what is infront of us, that many Muslims who we have welcomed to our country hate our way of life and want us dead ( for the love of god don't confuse the word many with majority).

You may say well I haven't experienced Muslim culture so I don't know what I'm talking about well, my 2 muslim friends.. one was murdered because another muslim family thought he was dating their daughter which dishonored them, another one is beaten by the male members of her family for things such as not coming home on time.

    1) immigration =/= terrorism. Its nice rhetoric from bnp leaflets though.
    2) You seem to 'despise' islam for the wrong reasons. Firstly, whilst shariah law opposes our judicial system, it does not mean one is more superior to the other. In fact, our judicial system was similar to that of the shariah not that long ago. Secondly, shariah is a fluid concept, not monolithic and to be framed in a completely judicial sense. Rather, when one refers to shariah, they may mean their own personal shariah (which is devotion to god, as opposed to devotion to consumption) or shariah in the legal courts. The latter is something most muslims don't really want anyway- if all muslims supported shariah law, then there wouldnt be so many muslim lawyers in our legal system to begin with , and there would have been much more evidence to support the idea that the islamic community wants a shariah state in the first place. Again, the only place these claims are made tends to be on the websites of the EDL, BNP and the US tea party.

3)Your 'muslim friends' (if you are not trolling) were not abused because of Islam, but because of culture. Honour killings are indeed evident with members of the Hindu faith, the Sikh faith and even in the Christian faith. Again, extremism isnt a concept linked just to islam- it is evident in all cultures and all religions and is much more the fault of irrationality and primitive thinking.

    1. I really don't understand your 1st point

    2. I was talking about shariah law in other countries such as those in the middle east I agree with what you say in point 2 apart from that out judicial system is superior.

    3. A culture heavily influenced by Islam( Unfortunately I am not trolling here).

well you havent really understood my post. Firstly, your immigration concerns shouldnt correllate to terrorism and immigration does not equate to terrorism, especially as most of our 'terrorists' are british born anyway.

secondly, our judicial system is certainly not superior. It has, over time moved away from being concerned with social justice and has concentrated on how to maximise profits and stop getting sued. The lawyers that bow down to corporates get paid bucketloads, and those that fight for social justice and equality are lucky if they can pay rent the next month. To even suggest our legal system is better than the middle east is a little short of hypocrisy- both contain moral ills.

and thirdly, would you say a sikh honour killing is influenced by islam ? what about a hindu ? Both religions have their fair amount of honour killings and taboos that are independent of religion-which you seem to fail to comprehend.

    1. Born from immigrants.. Anyway I merely listed it as a negative of immigration which you cannot deny.

    2. Our judicial system is superior as we don't cut off people's hands, stone women who have been raped, execute gays etc.

    3. While it may not come directly from Islam those in Islamic countries won't implement harsh punishments because it violate religious traditions and damage in this case Jordanian society. 6 months for killing someone.. yeah their system is much better

well no **** its born from immigrants. Why would a native person attack their own land beyond political reasoning ? However, when you judge terrorism INTERNATIONALLY, we find that not all the terrorists are muslims, and there are in fact a great number of hindu, sikh, and even buddhist terrorists. Also remember that 'one mans terrorist is another man's freedom fighter', and therefore while you judge the western world as the good guys, others do not. thus, the term terrorism is a flexible and vague one.

secondly, how does that make the western legal system any better ? I have just told you that while we may not stone or execute, at the same time, the western world's greatest weapon is capitalism. It is very much in favour of big corporations who can afford the best lawyers, and the whole system is centred around who can make the most money and not be sued. How for example, does the western legal system claim itself superior when it turns a blind eye to corporations such as BP damaging wildlife and natural habitat ? when it actively ignores men who have commited warcrimes, unless it is in the west's interest to stop it ? How is it superior when the poorest and most vulnerable people have little to no arsenal to tackle the giants who basically control the legal system ?
The west may not revert to 7th century practice, but when it is effectively controlled by a few individuals and a few corporations, i do not see the grounds on which to claim any form of moral superiority.

and you are still ignoring the fact that these punishments are not just restricted to the islamic world, but they occur in very christian parts of africa, in very hindu parts of sri lanka and even in non-religious nations. Injustice is not just an islamic thing like you seem to think- it is a very global thing and the west is just as guilty as the east .

want to fight injustice ? be my guest. But remember that injustice applies to every nation, and it is not a cultural war as you have laid it out to be.
