I was a prefect. I hated it. Some of my fellow got superiority-complexes, and I bitch slapped them to death *nods*

No offense meant to you but I'm REALLY glad we didn't have head boy/girl... too egotistical

I'm a prefect and whatever you do do not let it get to your head as two or three of our heads have become cocky knowitalls and it is a shame.

Reply 3

I was a prefect. I didn't have to do much apart from throw gobby little year 8 *****s out of the corridor every so often.

We have to wear navy and sky blue striped ties as prefects. And £1.60 off lunch when we do duties in the cafeteria or tuck shop, and our own common room. Which is always nice.

I've got to say, and I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but I think the whole headboy/girl thing is pretty disgusting. In my school the voting for it was just a popularity contest with no basis on merit or the ability of the person to do the job, and it's inevitable that the people who get the job are going to be snobby and arrogant because you'd have to be to nominate yourself in the first place.

I think a board of student governors is a much better idea, we have governors and headboy/girls at our school and the governors do a lot more work and are far more down to earth.

And no, I did not nominate myself and lose if thats what you are thinking.

Please don't be offended by this chiron, I'm just saying that is generally how I feel about the whole idea, I'm not necessarily saying you are any of these things.

I get a neat badge, and I get to say "stop that" to kids who are breaking rules that I always broke when I was in the lower years . But seriously, what I enjoy about it is the relationship we have with the staff. We are given a lot of leeway in the way we organise school activities, sixth form stuff etc.

I was a prefect for a year 7 class. Like Joe_87 said, the voting for headboy was just a popularity contest, as the teachers had already vetted any unsuitable applicants. So out of the nominees, the one who was the most popular was inevitably chosen. I mean yer it looks good on your CV, but the amount of time he had to put in after school and during school extra was (in my opinion) not worthwhile.

ollie

I agree with you in many ways. Our prefects are actually pretty laid back (and I like to think I am as a headboy). Some are more mouthy than others, but in general we get along with one another and with our colleagues. At our school our job description leans more towards helping the staff than enforcing discipline. Our prefects are voted for by the sixth form and approved by the teachers. Then the newly chosen prefects engage in a series of exercises from which two boys and two girls are shortlisted for headboy/girl. The four write a letter of application setting out their ideas etc and are then interviewed by the head and deputy head, and whoever performs best in the interview is made headgirl/headboy, with the runner-up being given deputy-head. But I have to say I work well with the prefect team and I think they are all great.

Our Headboy/head girl appointments were actually fairer. Everyone who ran had to submit a letter to the head stating the reasons why they were good for the job, then do a presentation to the rest of the school representatives, and then an interview and then the senior managment decided. No canvassing allowed.

I ran for head boy, though I ended up as a Senior Prefect. It was a good experience.

I was a Senior Prefect and I hated it, also it's not strictly a popularity contest as I got the most votes  but didn'y get head or either of the deputies. The guy who ended up getting it was the one with the least votes cos he was an arrogant hole

I was a prefect and the perks of the job made it worthwhile! Seriously the amount of times I got to stand inside in the warm while everyone else was cold outside  Other than that I think i was a nice prefect, I didn't shout at the kids or anything.

Head students at my high school were picked by the teachers, they picked 4 students and then interviewed them to see who would be the heads and who would be the deputies. The prefects were elected by teachers.

I was a Deputy Head Boy (or one of them).
We (the deputys and head) had far too much power though - we were level with the Headmaster
Ill never forget that time I told a dinner lady that if she had no authority over my prefects, and that I did what I did with them on the authority of the head. She wasnt best pleased...

People like you make the rest of us look bad.

I was a prefect, didn't have to do much cos we were never checked up on! We had to wear gross ties though! The only benefit of it is shoving it on old Mr.PS

I was a prefect in both primary and secondary school

Although it wasn't the best thing ever, I didn't mind it at all because I generally get on rather well with younger people...actually, I think I got to keep my prefect badge from secondary school - maybe I should see if I can find it whenever I go home in just over a week

Pretty sure it's the same just about anywhere...

Reply 17

we don't have prefects we have student helpers, but their basically the same we just wear badges that say student helper and there are 2 boys and 2 girls from each year.

Reply 18

We had form representatives and year representatives, I was one for a while(two or three years).

It was okay, but we didn't really change anything, or have that much power.
