why is survival of this bacterial important in dust? can it survive in the external environment by itself?

I would assume it could use the nutrients in the dust to survive. Assuming it could survive in this environment it could too be inhaled and set up its home in the lungs of a person, this residency could cause problems for the host.
At least that is what I would assume.
