Why is King's College ignored on TSR?

Probably because it's in a sort of no-man's land: not quite considered a "top 5" uni, but not a mediocre uni either, with no strong characteristics to differentiate it from the other London unis. Nottingham probably gets more attention due to it being the largest uni in it's area, and having an amazing campus, despite being around the same level. KCL does have an excellent Law and Medical school though.

Yeh, I'm kind of glad I do law at King's really... the other subjects it offers just aren't strong enough. I mean, one could do History at King's but it's not the best place to read history; Oxbridge/Durham are the best institutions for that.

I think KCL has law and medicine going for it.

LSE's full name is London School of Economics and Political Science. It's a social science specialist uni, with courses like economics, politics, history, law, etc. It's not a science uni.

I know, I wrote that before I went out and wasn't paying attention to every detail, but I did mention earlier in my post about business degrees, so thought anyone with a braincell would read the full post.

But then you directly referred to LSE as offering science degrees, so...

However, we all make mistakes - no harm done.

Whoever says KCL is **** are actually very misleading and just dumb themselves and have an inferiority complex and felt that the only way they could be appreciated as a person is through education.

It's on the same level as Bristol, York and Edinburgh pretty much, which is still damn prestiguous and highly respected.

But when we're talking top of the top of the top uni's, we're really talking oxb, imp, ucl, warwick, lse, and maybe durham.
IMO They seem to me to have a very narrow field of subjects and have most courses doesn't really seem to be 'common':s-smilie:

I really do not understand this negativity surrounding King's. Apart from Oxford and Cambridge, I can't think of other British Universities that have nurtured true intelligence and geniuses in certain fields. It's one of the oldest Universities in the country founded by one of the most admirable figures in our history. If it's good enough for John Keats and Virginia Woolf -among various others - then it's certainly good enough for most people in this country and on this site.
KCL is negatively portrayed by some people cos it's a London uni, unfortunate to always be compared with LSE, UCL and Imperial. In its own right, KCL has top departments in law, history, medicine and dentistry....not ignored on tsr but sometimes misrepresented.

There was also Wilkes and Franklin, and one of the greatest Physicist in history - James Clerk Maxwell, though these people were members of staff there, not undergrads.

there is a stupid rivalry between ucl / kcl when clearly ucl is quite a bit better (and im a kings student...)
but kings has got an excellent history department, apparently its second to oxbridge.. i think its just a university with massive disparities between the quality of the subjects taught.

Yeh, this is it. It's not a top 5 uni, perhaps not even a top 10, but it's not bad either.

Imperial and LSE are world class research unis, UCL to a large extent (certainly some departments), but I think it would be pushing it to say KCL was.

Well, I know V Woolf was an undergrad, or whatever the female equivalent was at the turn of the last century - studied History and Latin I believe. That goes to show, though, that it's not a mediocre University people seem to think it is.

They're in the top ten, KCL is just outside of the top 20. Now think about that, and look at how much KCL is discussed on this forum.

Guys what does it matter where a uni is in the league tables compared with it being ignored on TSR.

You seem to be assuming that the TSR members are soooo intelligent that they will only speak of the top ten universities.

Not everyone here is a AAAA student.

Before I refute INTJ, can I just say he is one amusing troll

So true ^ Everyone I know at KCL are UCL and LSE rejects. It's like the Oxford Brooks of London.

How many do you know?

Since when was it known as the Oxford Brooks of London? Please tell me. Use the search engine and find me one quote to back up what you just said. I dare you. Goodness me, you really do talk out of your arse.

London Unis are categories like this by most people (especially on here)..

Top

UCL
ICL
LSE
KCL

Good

QMUL
SOAS
RHUL
Goldsmith

Average/poor

Brunel
Kingston
Westminster
East London
Thames Valley

1. KCL is lower ranked. UCL pretty much trumps KCL at everything it offers. Of course you have War Studies at KCL and a decent medicine course, but, otherwise, UCL is higher ranked and more respected at practically everything it offers.

2. UCL, LSE and Imperial are all much higher ranked in UK tables, and are higher ranked internationally by far (excluding LSE, which is subject to unfair, biased criteria). UCL, LSE and Imperial also have, on average, better graduate prospects and higher average starting salaries. Moreover, many of the big firms actually state that they look to Oxbridge, then UCL, LSE and Imperial - KCL is thrown into the same circle as Queen Mary etc.

3. Competition is higher at UCL/LSE/ICL.

4. KCL does not compete internationally. Everyone I know abroad has heard of the other three; no one has heard of KCL (or they mistake it for King's College, Cambridge)

for 1 and 2, read my comments below.

3. And it isn't at KCL? :s-smilie:

4. KCL does compete internationally? Bloody hell. Just look at the Notable alumni list from KCL to know that they do. I mean really, are you really that desperate? :s-smilie:

Original post by INTJ
I don't know... I know loads of people who got rejected from UCL with 10A*s + and 4As at A level (same with LSE). Everyone I know had offers of at least AAA. But I know people at KCL with CCC! Employers also see a huge gap between UCL/LSE/ICL and KCL. There are some fields where this isn't the case but, overall, the gap is considerable to most.

Who got CCC and for what? What course? I'd like to read about it. I was told by a friend that their relative got in to UCL with BBB, after missing out on their AAB offer. Shock horrer, UCL is awful.

It's funny how you seem to know all these people. Is it your imaginary friends by any chance? You kind of remind me of David cameron in the election debate, coming out with "I met a...." line which he always used

Furthermore, it states on wiki (can't access the times website to verify it) that....

Entry to King's is competitive: the Sunday Times rates it as the 6th most difficult UK university to get into

You really don't like KCL, and it must be for a reason. Otherwise you wouldn't be spouting so much nonsense.

Original post by INTJ
Well, you said it yourself...top ten vs 'just outside of the top 20'. That is a significant gap!

reputation is far more important than ranking. Classic example. Lancaster is ranked number 10 and Bristol is ranked 14. Is Lancaster better than Bristol?

Original post by INTJ
I think it's because, for the most part, Exeter and Nottingham provide a similarly good education and have similar entry requirements for their tougher subjects. I don't even know why KCL is ranked as highly as it is; I think it should be lower, personally.

Erm, I don't know. Maybe let me get you some quotes from our friends wikipedia. Which states.....

King’s has a strong academic reputation, which is similar to the London School of Economics, Imperial College London and University College London.

and...

According to the 2009 Times Good University Guide, several subjects taught at King’s, including Law, History, Politics, Classics, Spanish, Portuguese, Music, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and Food Science are among the top five in the country

and finally...

According to the 2010 Complete University guide, many subjects at King's, including Classics, English, French, Geography, German, History, Music, Philosophy and Theology, rank within the Top 10 nationally. The Dental Institute has been known as the "Oxbridge Dentistry" as the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford do not offer Dentistry as a course of study. The College has had 24 of its subject-areas awarded the highest rating of 5 or 5* for research quality

Just to be cheeky....

The Sunday Times selected King's as the "University of the Year 2010/11" taking the position from last year's winner Oxford University.

Which is why I find your anti KCL stance so amusing to read  Like I said, you're an amusing troll.

Original post by INTJ
I didn't question the validity of the rankings. I said that I, personally, would rank KCL (and KCL alone) lower than it currently is. That's hardly disputing the validity of the entire ranking system.

I wonder why?

Original post by INTJ
I agree. I wouldn't make judgements about fellow students if I went to one of those universities, but I'd be inclined to lie and say I went to the 'good' one  Not Hallam, KCL, Brooks, Ruskin etc.

Really?

How on earth can you put KCL in the same sentence as Hallam, Brooks, Ruskin etc. How? I'd love to understand your logic. My lord, you really are angry at KCL. Were you ever rejected from there or something?
Original post by Blatant Troll
We can agree to disagree

Before I disappear from your life, I just want to reemphasise just how close KCL and LSE are, because I don't think you realise (please correct me if I'm wrong!). And also because I'm sad like that :awesome:

(KCL is the brown blob on the Strand)

As an ex member of KCL can I point out that a good chunk of the uni is located away from the strand. In particular Waterloo and London Bridge
Whether thats good or bad is a different matter.

Can't find SuperGuy's original post that you quoted, but: King's was named University of the Year this year, whether that's much of an accolade, you decide. In league tables it was 13th in the country I believe, and it's in the top 25 in the world.

Strand and Guys are two of the loveliest environments anyone could wish to study in. I haven't seen other campuses so can't comment.

There you go again with this your UCL is great and on par with LSE and Imperial.

It is LSE/Imperial> UCL > KCL.

You keep on showing your ignorance and childishness by claiming KCL cannot compete with UCL internationally. Rubbish!

Internationally it is LSE > Imperial > UCL/KCL.

If you are talking about graduate prospects, according to The Times, UCL is bottom for the Golden Triangle which are the top 6:

Most In Graduate Level Employment

1) Imperial
2) LSE
3) KCL
4) Cambridge
5) Oxford
6) UCL

QMW was 18, so don't you think it is UCL that is more likely to be tossed with QMW for graduate prospects?

Hardly do grad firms place UCL in their preference choice and leave out KCL. They prefer Oxbridge, LSE and Imperial.

According to the Times:

Fewest in unemployment after 6 months
1) Harper Adams UC
2) Surrey
3) Robert Gordon
4) Buckingham
5) Cambridge
6) KCL
7) Strathclyde
8)Aberdeen
9) Glamorgan
10) St Mary's UC

UCL is not even in the top 10.

Also here is the average starting salary by university from the Times, even KCL is higher than UCL, stop being ignorant:

http://tomcat4.prospects.ac.uk:8080/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1454&sid=789c853f6b81ec5be6a50555a79ea56d

1 Imperial College 25,889
2 LSE 24,513
3 Cambridge 22,981
4 King's College London 22,944
5 University College London 22,287
6 Oxford 21,287

Considering these 3 tables, how can you claim that UCL has a better employment prospect than KCL? You are a very ignorant young man with a chip on your shoulder.

Any grad preference I have seen advertised and UCL is included, it ALWAYS has Warwick, Durham, KCL, Edinburgh, Bristol etc also included. But there are several jobs that target only Oxbridge and LSE exclusively. UCL has no kind of exclusivity treatment or advantage in employment than other top universities outside the Top 4. It is not in the same class as LSE or better than KCL for employment. Stop deluding yourself.

Drop the chip on your shoulder as I have told you several times.

As usual, your rubbish unsubstantiated claims. Which loads of people? You always claim this. Do you go about asking hundreds and thousands of people for their grades?

Stop lying!

Employers see UCL less than LSE and Imperial and on par with KCL.

It is the most central university (at least out of the ones you've mentioned).

For one, I don't see what the rah rah is about being the most central university.

Secondly, you can throw a stone from LSE to KCL, so how can KCL claim more centrality?
Reply 79
Nottingham is rah? I did not know this... Whenever I've been there it's all chavs and emos hanging round all over the place... Then again, I don't go to the uni that often.

My friend goes to Kings... she is a lil' bit rah
