Hey Cheri, nice to see that you're a WoW player!

World of Warcraft uses a range of ports, but the most important is TCP on port 3724.
The Blizzard Downloader uses a larger, more complex range of ports: TCP port 6112 and all ports in the range 6881-6999.

    Hope this helps.

this is great, except my uni wont open ports, for 'security reasons'
most workaround's seem to suggest using a vpn, yet Im already going through a VPN to connect.
Does this make sense to anyone, I'm caught up in all the babble

Try using this http://hotspotshield.com/ it's essentially a VPN that acts like a proxy, only it works for your entire connection and not just you're browser. It is certainly legal and if you have been advised to use a VPN then go for it!

that looks like a great idea.
So do I actually need to connect to the uni vpn to access the internet?
ill give you a run down on my settings, maybe I can change some to play WoW?

    username $$$
    password *****
    Session:
    disconnect when switching accounts. checked
disconnect when user logs out. checked
send all traffic over vpn connection. unchecked (sounds promising, lah?)
    use verbose logging
    Setup VPN on Demand
    TCP/IP:
Configure IPv4 - Using PPP is selected
    Ipv6 - Auto selected
    DNS Servers: empty
    Proxies: None selected

    I hope this helps
